I've had a couple of 1st gen Tundras through the years and I've seen guys try everything. To get any noticeable power out of our engines the only way is to go forced induction. You can add headers, exhaust, intake, UNICHIP etc. but you're luck to get 20-30HP and even then most of that power will come from the headers which will gain most of it's power in the upper RPM range.
Some vehicles have wonderful stock manifolds, but the headers can do wonders with forced induction. My cousin's Golf VR6 had wonderful stock manifolds, I told him I wasn't going to pay for custom headers and even guys at the track running superchargers/turbochargers on that pocket rocket kept the headers stock.

Yeah sometimes going too big you actually loose HP / TQ.
