Default Lexus Link Gen2, cellphone based only?

All GXs with KDSS around here have Lexus Link, so I had to buy GX with Lexus Link and now I am trying to understand usefulness/uselessness of it.

Based on everything I could find, the only communication is via cell phone (verizon network). My dealer claim that it also has satellite communication as a backup, but I can not find anything related for it.

Does anyone know for sure if it Lexus Link Gen2 can use satellite for emergencies, or is it cellphone based only (which makes it completely useless in my mind)?

Thanks,

Vadim

Its a cellphone based system. There is no satellite communication system. The only satellite technology used is the gps sytem so your vehicle can be located in case of emergencies such as accidents, air bag deployment, or driving direction instruction.

Why do you consider it useless?

That's what I thought.

I personally would never trust technology for emergences which may work or may not depending on location. I am much better off with PLB (i.e. http://www.acrelectronics.com/resqfix/resqfix.htm). Yes it will not notify police in case air bag deployment, but I know that I will send a signal for help at any location.

Anyway, I'll consider that KDSS cost me extra 760$, still worth it.

Got reply from Lexus Customer Satisfaction:

"The Lexus Link system in our vehicles uses a cell phone based system and does not have the capability of using direct satellite communication. Lexus has designated coverage for the system and does not rely on Verizon or any other phone company for service coverage."

So the still be the same, it will not work in the mountains/deserts/etc..., where there is higher chance for emergency need. It will work in urban areas, where there are usually observers anyway, who would call police.

Vadim.

PS: this is one item where Lexus is considerably worse than GM (OnStar).

The first generation Lexus Link was OnStar based. The current setup is through Oem Telematics Service, but I believe they are using Verizon's CDMA network for coverage.

What is different about the Onstar system?

Can the Lexus Link do things like unlock the vehicle, read the engine codes, etc. for you?
