Default Nav DVD damaged over time?

I recently updated the nav DVD to 6.1, was using 3.1. When I took out the 3.1 DVD I noticed the DVD had 3-4 deep scratches in a perfect circular pattern, which would explain why I got a DVD read error from time to time. But it looks like it happened over time, in the drive, since the circles are perfect. My oem copy of 6.1 I got off eBay is in perfect condition. The 6.1 DVD has been in there for about a week now and last checked it was still perfect.

Just to be sure, should I make a backup copy and use that? Does that even work? Or has anyone tried using d-skin protectors and was the nav system able to read the DVD okay with the d-skin on the DVD? Guess I could try that one myself since a d-skin would not cost all that much.

d-skin should not cause any read error.

I ordered some. I'll try it out and post what happens.

you can make a back up copy, I did. Need a double layer disk and drive to do it. the copy works as well
I dont use any original disks audio or dvd in the vehicle in case of damage

Thanks super_cjc and pump142. The d-skin works, but I think I'll also try to use a back-up copy just to be sure and keep the original safe at home.
