Default Please help me with my deal....

I am trading a 2004 GMC Denali with Moonroof and captains chairs with 36000 miles for a 2006 GX470. Nice shape, very clean, no wrecks, etc. I have a Carmax quote of 28k for my truck, but Tennessee taxes the difference.

Dealer is offering me my truck and 21277 plus tax and 129 doc fee.

GX has:

Nav/ML
Spoiler
3rd row seats
tow hitch (the real one)
preferred acc. package

List 53243
CR invoice 46154 or 45221 with holdback
Dealer says that I can buy the truck for 48777 cash. He is valuing my trade for 27500.

Another out of state dealer offered me a lower price. I went there...200 miles...he lowballed my trade to 24k. I walked and he sold the car. Are these units so hot that they can sell them at a high price??

If the 24k was real money, then my local dealer is selling me close to invoice.

I have another quote of 50k from another dealer (100 miles)...but he has to see my trade...of course..I can't blame them.

Any opinions or thoughts??

Thanks,

Rick

You should be able to buy a GX now for about $500 above invoice, GX is no longer a hot selling vehicle. Always negotiate the new vehicle's price along with you trade in. As you have found out, they will play around with numbers for the trade in to compensate for the price of the new vehicle. As you might have known, all American full size SUVs such as your 2004 GMC Denali is not worth too much now due to the gas prices. Even the imports have taken a hit, but not to the extend of the large American SUVs. My guess is that you should be able to buy a GX for $500 or less above invoice and look up your trade in value in KBB.com and since it is a large American SUV, subtract $3000 or $4000 from that trade in price.

Good Luck

Sounds like a decent deal...I would jump at it before it goes away. Maybe try talking them into KDSS

Consumer Reports Invoice= 46154
500 over = 46654

KBB for Denali= 26270

500 over invoice - denali (kbb value) = 20384

He is offering me Denali plus 21277. A difference of 893....I think that I should take it....what do you think?

Also, another dealer has an 06 with 5700 miles...what should that one sell in lieu of a new one?

Thanks again

Rick

Sounds like a pretty good deal. Hes giving you a 900 bucks less than he should for your trade in, but since its a large American SUV, it is a fair trade in price.

in my experience KBB is usually low on trade in value as it is based mostly on western auction sales. Many dealers use the black book to determine current auction price on vehicles. Here is what came up for your Denali:

Used Vehicle Valuation Report
2004 GMC Yukon 4D Utility AWD

Search listings

Condition Trade-In Value Retail Value Description
Clean $30,215 $34,025 No body scratches, dents, rust or other signs of wear. Interior is perfect. Very low mileage. Very few vehicles quality for Clean when a vehicle is traded in.
Average $28,995 $32,125 Body is very clean with only a few minor scratches, no dents and no rust. Interior is very clean with very little noticeable wear. Mileage less than 15,000 miles per year.
Rough $25,350 $30,375 Body is very rough with many scratches, dents, rust or hail damage. Interior is dirty and shows excessive wear. Mechanically needs work. High mileage.
Original MSRP in 2004 $49,310
The above values are based on the net value of $900 for equipment and options, and an odometer reading of 36,000.

First number is trade in value, second is retail value. here is the site to check your vehcile

http://www.carquotes.com/TradeinRepo...&SumOption=900

As for the one with 5k miles.......if it is a dealer demo meaning not titled as used, most dealers will only give 10-15 cents/mile credit as a discount so less than a grand off at best..........I'd take a new one over that.

Show him the black book report and see if he will meet you halfway.

Everytime I have traded a car, the salesman brings the KBB report with a smile and says here is what your car is worth. I then pull out the Black Book Value report on CURRENT auction prices and the smile disappears with the words "let me talk with my manager."

Thanks for the help....my hometown dealer is offering me 27,500...which may be pretty close considering condition of vehicle...somewhere near 'good'...but he is offering that against a price of 48,777...which is about 2500 over invoice.....they would have to order the vehicle

The pre-owned one is just that...preowned...it has been titled..one of the lexus 'car jockey's' bought it and traded it at 1st service...the salesman said that this guy trades all his vehicles at 1st service.....must be nice! He did say that he didn't know how much he could come off that car since they be in 'pretty deep.'

If I figured 5%, would that be off of invoice....or MSRP?

When I bought my wife's rx330 last month, I bought new since they were discounting the rx's to make way for the 350s. Most of the gx's that I have seen used are priced pretty high.

There is another dealer that has one that just came in. He wants me to put down a deposit to hold it until I can get there Saturday. Not too sure about that...any thoughts?

Thanks again,

Rick

Default Gx

You shouldn't be paying more than $1000 over invoice ! They still get the holdback, so they're making money... Keep shopping, tell them 1K over invoice period..

You could always try to sell your ride locally, then just shop. How far are you willing to go to get a GX. You can do alot of shopping on the Net.... Get prices and go from there.

Tennessee is a 'tax the difference' state....so selling it myself is something that I would rather avoid...I don't mind driving several hundred miles to buy a gx....I just am having trouble getting 'firm' bottom line offers since I have a trade...does that make cents...

I am vacationing in Florida this week...I will be driving back to Tn. this Sat. I will stop off in Birmingham 1st to try to negotiate the 'preowned' with 5700 miles...then I can stop off in Huntsville . They are the ones that want me to put down a deposit...which I may do provided it is 'non-binding'

My wife is getting weary of my search....so I may be limited in my 'dealership' time....but it would be nice to not have to wait for Nashville to order one.

Thanks again,

Rick

Maybe it's me, but I always wonder why somebody sells a vehicle with 5700 miles. I'm sure there are real reasons, especially with a vehicle at this price( divorce, reserve call up, loss of job, etc.), but I would make extra sure there was nothing wrong with it. When did it get to the U.S.? If it was by last Fall, I'd also want to know where it had been.

They told me that this customer trades his new vehicles every time they need their 1st service. He is an older wealthy man who comes in every few months.....they said....

But some Carfax research would be in order....

Does Alabama have the same tax break? Florida has alot of dealers, may as well try there too....

I was in a similar spot as you, I had a GX and when I moved back to the mainland I went back to a RX.... I was unhappy with the RX, so back to a GX. AZ is also a tax difference state. I usually buy from a dealer in Calif where I get killer deals, but with the tax deal here in AZ, I could do it here. I ended up selling the RX from the paper in a few days and got a little more than I would have gotten doing the trade.. Sorry I'm rambling............

Dealers here in AZ are not willing to deal like Calif, but I was able to play them against each other to come up with a good price..

Since I did sell the RX locally, I Special ordered my new GX from my dealer in Calif..

I would just try to play them against each other......

Good luck !!

I guess someone could trade their car after the first service everytime, but I would be enclined to think that is a line - I would want ot see some history or talk to the guy - someone could be that crazy, but I would be more enclined to think it was something else, someone bought it, was really unhappy, had a life changing issue or something and needed to get rid of it - could be for honest reasons, could be that it had issues and to keep the customer they gave him a good deal on something else. Ask for the service records see what has been done in 6000 miles, when was it sold originally and where (was it them or another dealer) - I would tend to be really suspicous just in case. I saw one llike that a couple years back, it had 3 or 4 k on it I beleive they said the customer didn't like the color after having it for a month and brought it back - sounded really suspicous and they where only discounting it 1500, so now way!

Thanks for all the thoughts...I tend to agree about why would one trade that fast....

I think that I am going to go with the deal at home.

My 2004 GMC Denali and 21277.
They will order the car for me and I can drive mine until the new one arrives.
It is worth 1000 or so not to have to go all over the Southeast, plus I have patients at
the dealership...some goodwill is not all bad...imho

The MSRP on the car is 53676. The invoice is around 46174. So they are going near 1500 or so over invoice. The nearest dealer besides mine (which is 3 miles from my office) is 70 miles.

Thanks again and looking forward to the new truck.
