Default Satellite Radio Installation Question

For those that have installed either XM or Sirius satellite radio in their GX, did you disconnect the battery before doing the installation? I imagine I should so as not to possibly set off the airbags or cause a short. If you did disconnect the battery, did you have to normalize the power windows and moonroof or did everything work as it should after you reconnected the battery? Thanks

Hopefully I will be installing Sirius on my 06 GX tomorrow.

Did not disconnect battery. Didn't see need for that.

I just thought that working near those wires behind the dash might trigger an airbag release.

Cool Satellite Radio Installation Question

I installed XM radio in my 06 GX 470 and did not disconnect the battery as there are no bare wires involved in the installation I do not have Nav so I installed everything (except the antenna) in the area inside and above the glove box. I drilled two holes, installed grommits, one hole for antenna lead and the other for connections to and from the GX radio. Very easy installation.

I installed the LX Sirius satellite radio kit in my 06 GX yesterday. Works great and I received a 3 month free subscription and they waived the activation fee. Since I saved the labor rate a dealer would have charged and paid $270.00 for the Sirius receiver and the LX fit kit, I don't think thats a bad deal. I also received a free 3 month subscription and they waived the activation fee and thats worth about $49.00, so the Sirius deal cost me about $221.00.

What is this satelite radio kit? You cant be refering to the eye sore sportser reciever that you have to stick the mount to the windshield? Is this some kind of add on made for the gx? I asked the dealer and they knew nothing about it...Post a link if you have one, i'm curious to see...

There is really nothing to see. It is plug and play. Plugs into the back of the Nav unit in the dash and into the amp under the driver seat and becomes an integral part of the Nav / radio. All controls on the radio and sterring wheel are integrated. Xm or Sirus stations are displayed on the screen along with the artist/song.

Default Still a bit confused, however. Some say the LX kit is best and others the ES (m)

kit is needed. Also, there is also debate as to whether a different kit is needed for cars equipped with NAV/ML while many peopl use aftermarket antennas to reach the back of the truck.

So, does anyone have a definitive answer as to which fits, which is best and why? Really irritating that Lexus doesn't have a dedicated kit for the vehicle!!

From what I have seen on the GX, the reason I think Lexus doesn't offer a satellite kit for the GX is the lack of room to place and secure the receiver. There isn't really any room under the front seats, what with the navigation unit under the front passenger seat and the ML amp under the drivers seat. And behind the interior panels in the cargo area is pretty tight. If the GX didn't have that storage box with the pull off door on the left panel, there would be plenty of room for the receiver.

You are probably right. Using the kit for the LX I installed my receiver in that storage box. The plastic bottom of the box is a seperate piece and was easily removed to install the wiring and then reinstall.

Hello,

Just to set the record straight there are multiple posts concerning the install. ES kits are the BEST for the GX... its is the SAME reciever on both LX, GX, etc. What IS different is the harness. The ES harness is simply SHORTER then LX there are not other significant differences. The only other difference is that there is a differenent plug for the vehicles equiped with NAV vs/ no-nav system... so you are safe to order the ES Fit Kit (harness) and Reciever... I don't recall the part numbers off the top of my head but there are in many posts... so is the install. The reciever mounts under the passanger seat there is no need to run a very long LX harness to the back of the truck.... will take much longer and too many panles to take off.

thanks

I see why many might want the ES kit, since it is indeed "easier" to install and uses a shorter harness. It also uses a windshield mount antenna, which to me is less than pleasing to the eye and arguably less efficient at reception.

Others like, like BobGX have installed the LX kit which admittedly takes more work as the antenna wire must be routed to the rear and, finally, to the roof, where it arguably gets better reception and doesn't look so damned ugly. Also, Bob notes that he has read the LX kit maintains a more steady volume, if memory serves. I hae no experience with this.

I'll likely go with the LX kit and take the time to route the wires to right way. Better right than rushed!

Hello,

I installed the ES kit with an EXTERNAL antenna from my previous Sirius Radio and did not use the included internal antenna (I was able to sell it with my other Sirius radio). Yes the wire is routed from the roof, under the rear gasket then inside the lip of the gasket (interior) then under the bottom panel (you have to remove couple of screws and snap the end of the panel out) and the under the driver side paneling to under the seat... its quite easy.... again if you go with the LX kit the harness is REALLY long so you WILL HAVE to install the reciver in the back most likely as that is a very thick wire and you might not have enough room under the seat to store all teh excess harness, I had trouble even with the much shorter ES harness. Volume is not a problem at all with the ES kit, perhaps trouble that people had was due to ASL?!? sadly the titles are cut off on ALL the kits....
