Default Backup sensor from dealer

I will be picking up my GX470 next week. The dealer is recommending the backup sensor system by Audiovox. The system will include 2 sensors on the rear bumper and will have audible beeping when in reverse. The price is $495 installed. Is this a reasonable price? And do I actually need this?

Default Not if you have Nav

I believe your new truck has navigation, right? If so, save your $ for something else (like HID lights ). The backup camera that displays on the navigation screen is more than adequate.

Plus, why would you want the dealer drilling holes on your bumper? I'd be nervous!

I have had my GX for 2 weeks. The backup camera that comes with the navigation has worked really well. I don't think you need anything else. Enjoy your new ride.

Like what everyone said, no need if you have the backup camera.

As a reference point when backing up, if the front bumper of the back car is about halfway on my screen, that's when I stop .

Or, have someone help you. You can stand outside and have someone back up (or you can be the one backing up). When your satisfied with the distance, have them stop and go check it out on the screen and just remember where the bumper is on the screen.
Make sure you have enough room for the gate to swing open.

Save that $ for the hid

Default Can backup camera be retrofitted on GX with Nav?

My GX comes with navigation but does not have the backup camera (we all make mistakes), but would I be able to add/install the camera?

So you must have an '03 or an '04 built before 12/03?

I guess it's theoretically possible to add the camera, but I'm not sure how painful (or not) it would be to wire it. Also, you'd probably need to modify the rear door to mount the camera and make it look factory.

I've heard of aftermarket cameras that you can get as well. You may want to search the web to see what you find.

Default My is an 03 with Nav but no camera.

I figured I would have to replace the trim piece above the license plate / camera, but I'm wondering if every GX comes wired for the camera.

You're right, the trim piece wouldn't worry me that much. Again, it's the wiring. I guess it is possible that there is some wiring in there already, but I doubt it, particularly since they didn't introduce the camera until the '04 model. I could see some wiring in the early '04s, but I also doubt it.

There are a few techs who post in this forum. Hopefully one of them can shed some light. Also, have you met any of the techs at your Lexus dealer? It might be worthwhile to ask them.

Other than that, the service manual should have the answer. You could get a one-day subscription at http://techinfo.toyota.com/ to look up what you want.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the response. I will save my money and not bother with the backup sensor as all of you suggested. I will use that money for Weathertec floor mates, phone and other small accessories.

I was looking into backup sensors on eBay for around $30 for 2 sensors or $50 or so for 4 sensors...they come painted as well, flush with the bumper..

Anyone else see these?
