Hello,

It is not the fan clutch that is loud, it is the fan moving all the air that is causing the howling noise. When I went to death valley with the GX the fan was on the entire way. You can hear it in the cabin and the is a noticable decrease in power.

Cause it's colder in winter so your engine stays cooler off the outside temp. but when you start hearing the fan on all the time hot or cold, the fan clutch might be shot. and it's an easy fix, i've done it, takes about 15mins depending on skill level.

This being our first summer with the '04 GX, I noticed the same thing on the hot days over 90. Every time I pulled away from a light, you'd really hear it until about 10mph. I wondered the same thing until I heard it also on my in-law's '04 GX also.

I get that howling noise all the time, usually after about 10-15 minutes of stop/go driving or about 30 min of freeway - sometimes sooner if the temp is in the 110's.

I am use to all sorts of fan noises as it is just hot around here, but the GX is a bit more loud than the rest I've experienced. Kind of surprising for a Lexus.

Hi Angel,

Don't worry about it. It is just an auxiiliary fan kicking on when the temperature is high enough, like the previous posts said.

I've had this feature in other vehicles and have never had a problem. Of course, if there was a problem, the 4/50 warranty would cover it, but this technology has been around for a while, so I doubt it will break, particularly on a Lexus/Toyota.
