Default Tail light problems

I've experienced a new problem on my GX that I haven't seen discussed yet and was hoping for feedback from all of you. A couple of months ago another driver pointed out that my taillights were not working. After switching the light switch from "Auto" to "On" they lit up. Scheduled an appointment and got the old "couldn't reproduce the problem" thing. It happened a second time, so we stopped using the Auto function altogether, just used the on setting.

Well, this morning another driver points out that the taillights were off, even though we've not used the Auto setting. I made a service appointment for Wednesday morning, but am hoping that in the meantime I don't have this problem given the hours that it's now dark. In addition to being an important safety issue, I also don't want to get a ticket for this condition.

Any ideas on the culprit, or has anyone else had this problem? I'm suspecting it's some kind of short, and that the dealer is going to have to trace the wire (have no idea where it runs) to find it. If it's not that I have no clue.

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up

Not usually a short as shorts usually blow fuses or breakers, sounds like a poor ground or loose wiring conection,if it has a factory trailer wire harness check all the connectors.
