Default wet carpets - cost to fix

Hi

I have a 2000 GS300 which has the driver’s side wet carpet issue and this is stacking up to the point of having to remove the dash...

I’m happy to have a go, with help from all the forums and if there’s nothing else wrong, other than a cracked housing, I’m tempted just to repair this as suggested, but given the amount of work involved it seems logical to replace both the evaporator and heater core whilst I’m at it.

However before I proceed I’d like to know if there any other potentially expensive problems waiting for me down the road such as those related to the transmission or engine?

The car has 140,000 + miles on the clock and otherwise is running great, so I’d really like to know if it’s worth repairing or am I simply wasting my money, should fix the problem for as little as possible and look to replace the car?

Thanks

I got my mechanic from Lexus to fix the same issue that you are having and he charged about 400 buck I think. But the problem hasn't been an issue since and he said he had to remove the whole dash and that stuff

Guys,

There’s quite a few postings regarding wet carpets and I think I understand the fix. If the sunroof vents are clear, all the floor grommets are in place and the windshield not leaking then you’re looking at disassembling the whole dash and potentially replacing the A/C housing, heater core and/or evaporator, although in my case I think it’s a cracked A/C housing (which contains both the heater core and evaporator) causing water to leak out and into the driver’s foot well. I don't have a coolant smell (yet) and the A/C blows cold...

My biggest concern is that I spend a weekend fixing this and then the following week another big $$$ item bites the dust. I know you can’t double guess what’s going to fail, but I don’t have a good understanding of what the GS300/400 weak spots are and what I should be looking out for.

Any ideas?

Thanks Jumplead

If im not mistaken, and I might be... Your housing is on the passenger side. If you have water on the drivers side I would check your sunroof drain, or have your windshield resealed. Is your windshield still the original oem one or an aftermarket unit?

If its aftermarket then it wasnt sealed correctly, there is a seal on the windshield that needs to be replaced.

Id put my money there, never heard of A/C hounsing cracking... please post a link so i can learn of this issue.

I'd like to find any information regarding this issue as well. I've had this problem for a while now, I found it quite odd that I was getting wet drivers side carpet with no indications of a leak anywhere. Happened with my OE windshield and the after market one.

Here's the most comprehensive post on wet carpets I could find...

OK, Lexus ASM thanks for the suggestion regarding the windshield. I’ll check it out as it may have been replaced.

I based my assumptions of the attached post, which seems pretty thorough. However, before I tear everything apart I’ll be taking a closer look at the vents, windshield etc…

...the evaporator housing has 2 halves with a O ring gasket.
When the O ring fails it drips right over the center hump, most of the time the water drips on the hump and runs down on the passenger side but it can drip down the drivers side.
You can see the evaporator drip by pulling the carpet out of the way and looking with a flashlight from the passenger side, after the A/C has run a while, of course .

My 400 has this leak but my carpets stay dry...
