My 2019 GS 350 with just 19K miles makes a clanging sound when the car is shifted from park into reverse. Sounds like a significant problem to me. The car is under warranty and I'm planning to take it into the dealer to have it repaired. I'm anticipating the dealer saying there's nothing wrong and I want to be prepared to argue with them. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, what was the cause of the noise and what was the remedy? Thanks in advance.
A lot of Toyotas and Mazdas make a sound when shifted into reverse but I think it is usually the brake pads making the noise. That would be a waste of time at the dealer for you.
Do you apply the parking brake when parked or simply shift the transmission into Park and get out? Many years of parking like this can likely damage your transmission, I hope that's not the case with you.
Actually, the only time I can hear it is when I'm standing in the garage next to the car and my wife is backing out. When she shifts the car into reverse, it makes the clanging sound. I took the car into the dealership last Friday. They still have it and are trying to find the problem. The service rep called me today and told me they think it is a bad vacuum pump. They have ordered the part and plan to install it tomorrow. With any luck, I'll have an answer tomorrow.
I was going to create a post about the exact same thing until I read this thread. Mines also clunked when shifting from park to reverse. Called the Lexus dealer today and they wanted $175 just to diagnose it. The person above got it right. I turned off the automatic parking brake and the clunking noise went away. Thanks 4GS forums!
