Default Dealership maintenance or DIY

3rd owner 2013 with 58780 debating over taking to lexus to have them do a full once over and maintenance on the vehicle hoping the techs find anything that would need to be handled before its to late, or wrench myself and save who knows how much. I'm sure I will get mixed answers but has anyone had a full maintenance job done by lexus or Toyota and remember a price?

You're about to have your major 60K service. The risk you run at the dealer is the apprentice doing it all and the service advisor upselling you rubbish like fuel injector cleans and all of that rubbish.

I chose to DIY my 60K service, did my brake pads, engine oil, diff oil, transmission filter and oil, spark plugs(easy) and air filter.
Maybe take it to an independent mechanic for it's 67.5K oil change, have them do that and give the vehicle a once over?

I seem to recall people here quoting over 1K for the major service.

Probably depends what needs to be done. For me, I just do the air and pollen filters but have them do oil and other services. If not major warranty repairs, I heard people bring it to Toyota and save money.

Toyota would be more local than a lexus dealership for my area so maybe I will swing by there and see if they can give me a quote.

Honestly I would pay the 1k knowing everything was done correctly by a lexus tech but like you said with something as minimal as a 60k maintenance might get the new guy special lol

I took my ES, RX, ct, GX, and '15 GS to the dealer for complimentary services and free inspection. Otherwise they went to my local shop for regular maintenance and XX,000 mile services and it will be the same for this one. You can record it on the Lexus Drivers site or simply keep the receipts if it is of concern for you handing it off to the next owner. Air filtration filters and simple stuff I took care of myself and marked it down when done.

I would pay that $1K also if I know I'll get a great job done.

I'm the same. I know how to do the oil but it's a dirty job and dispose of.

My experience was similar. I bought my 2017 GS350 AWD at 29,500 miles and took it to the dealership for the 30k service a few weeks later. Everything checked out fine, and I paid ~$800. If the peace of mind is worth it to you, go ahead and have them check it out. It certainly made me feel better. As others have said, beware the upsells - luckily for me, they didn't suggest any.

Really it is the Service Advisor (SA) who you need to be wary of. They get paid for your service and everything you agree to get done. A friend of mine is a retired BMW SA. He had a loyal customer base because he would be honest as to what the BOOK says should be replaced vs what really needed to be tended to

He said he felt like a small town doctor who customers would come to from other dealers (not even BMW) to get his opinion on what really needed done on their cars

Sorry to get off subject a tab. I spent too much time at dealer before purchasing.

Interesting you'll mention those stories. Before I purchased my current '20 GS350 F Sport. I went to my local dealer since I didn't like how the local internet manager was when I chatted him last year so I didn't want to go thru him. He was aggressive and wanted to really sell something with numerous calls and emails. I don't like aggressive pressure tactics.

This year during the miss opportunity for another CPO GS350, I got intro another Sales Associate. I found he is very cool, not pushy and not pressuring me at all, he would let me test drive a GS350 F Sport. First Day, I drove just 1 GS350 F Sport. When home to think about it. On the 2nd meeting, he let me drive 2 more GS350 F Sports but also I went home to think more. On the 3rd meeting, I brought my wife to look together. He pulled up 2 GS350 vehicles, I drove 1 GS. My wife wanted to test drive the RX, so we got the keys for that one as well and drove it around the block as well. We decided to think about it. He was out on our 4th meeting, he referred to a newer SA, we test drove the NX and another GS but decided to sleep on it.

I had also sent pricing inquiry on Edmunds.com on pricing, the other SA at dealer 2 was very aggressive and really wanted my sale. The person would call, text almost immediately when I submitted the price request. The SA called and text numerous times over the next 2 days. They weren't even low on price compared to my local dealer. Though the conversations were great, I felt uncomfortable and pressured each time during the chat. I did sales but not auto sales so I know how to brush them off also.

Of course the 3rd dealer didn't care about my business, just send an email. I tried call the phone # and nobody answered a number of times. They didn't bother me much til the weekend to reach back out again which is nice in a way. We did purchase our ES at the 3rd dealer but were not 100% satisfied with the service or the CPO vehicle. I'm not too happy to return when a purchase wasn't a great experience esp. a Lexus Dealer.

Dealer 4 was really good but far away and didn't have my color selection and said it would be hard to get a dealer trade when I asked the SA. They had a great internet sales person but was out when I called the week after on Wednesday. This dealer was only a tab lower in price also. I actually called their dealership like 2x around 4:30pm to 5pm and nobody answer sales calls I guess. I was so shocked. So I didn't have any good expectations for service.

Guess whom I purchased from?

I went back to the local SA, for the last time and 5th time. I already negotiated the price via text and phone the last 2 days before given I don't want to be in the dealer during Covid. I probably didn't get the best price but I felt I got better service overall and the sale person deserved the sale at the end. I preferred low pressure, no upsell at the dealership. We purchased the GS from the local SA at the Lexus Dealer and still really happy.

Of course, I gave that SA an excellent rating on the feedback.

Same with service advisors, I wouldn't like an aggressive person or one that tries to upsell products or service if not needed. Just my take.

The 60k maintenance involves mostly inspection of components. I would take this opportunity to establish a relationship with a reputable Toyota/Lexus indy shop and have them perform the full service. IMO $1000 for a brake fluid, oil, and spark plug change is a bit much.

Edit: Good bit of info here:

Just DIY your own oil/filter. Easy job and you can do it properly. Have your own Techstream so you can diagnose any faults then decide if you need to take it Lexus at all.

I enjoy servicing my cars. I use the dealer for stuff under warranty or under terms of the sale.
I imagine a lot of Lexus customers are not wrenches like I am.
If I didn't enjoy wrenching, I would find a good local shop and let them do everything.
