Looks like those white fasteners are used to keep the screw in place, searched through the forums and found that the tail lights need to be removed.

Got a bit further and saw that there's different plastic fasteners...I also tried to remove the plates on the license plate bulb area to see if there's anything to be unscrewed there, but I was afraid I was going to break them pulling them off.
Very stuck now...any help greatly appreciated.
