Default Change compartment cover came off

The change compartment cover in my GS came off. The compartment (covered) is located just below and left of the steering wheel, as shown in the pictures below.

The cover came off along with a spring. It seems an easy fix. I tried four configurations for the spring but I am not being able to get back to the smooth operation that I had before this came off. Perhaps I am not doing something right. This is how the cover and spring look like and the configurations I tried.

The change compartment cover (top view).

The change compartment cover (left view) and spring. The spring will go on this side. Note the grooves.

The change compartment cover (right view) and spring. The spring will not go on this side. Note the absence of grooves.

Spring position #1.

Spring position #2.

Spring position #3.

Spring position #4.

The spring.

Can anyone shed some light on how to fix this? Thanks!

I tried looking at mine to gleam some insight, but I couldn't really see much. However, based on what I could tell, I think your spring position #1 is correct. I suspect the loop on the long end of the spring wraps around a tab on the car/dash side, and perhaps when you installed it in this way, the loop failed to make that connection.

Or I wonder if something in there is broken. I'm curious as to how it fell out. Mine is really tight in there with no wiggle room. I would struggle to remove mine, even if I was trying.

Sorry I don't have more to offer than that. I searched online for some diagrams but couldn't find anything helpful.

I do not think anything is broken. I went to the Lexus dealership. They inspected and told me nothing seems to be broken. However I will have to pay them labor to fix this. I decided to first give it a try myself. Could you please post here or pm me the photo of what you have?

I bang my knee on that damn thing at least once every couple of months if left open. I just popped it back in this Sunday. Position #1 is i believe is the correct one.

I did just that

I tried position #1 but it does not open as smoothly as it used to. Have you ever taken the cover out like me?

Thanks. I could not find anything where the loop on the long end of the spring would wrap around. Everything attached to the dash seems snug and smooth, no sign of any breakage. Dealership confirmed that.

After a lot of search, I found this similar thread in the LS forum but they have a different kind of mechanism:

I didn't even know about this change compartment until today. I've been putting all my change on the tray inside the middle compartment. I was gonna buy the ashtray for the change too. Good thing I didn't haha. Thanks for the info guys!!
