Default Lexus quality a myth?

Either Lexus uses cheap parts or I have the worst luck in the world. I purchased a 2013 GS350 with 56k just over a month ago. In that month both front door locks have stopped working, forcing me to look like an idiot reaching from the back to gain entry into the car. Then the clock stopped working. Then the radio volume button broke. And now the seatbelt retractor has stopped pulling the belt in. This car is in great shape with low miles but the interior is falling apart. Is this due to Lexus using substandard parts? I have read these are all common issues with these cars. Its making me wish I would have bought the Audi that I originally looked at.

I have the same car same mileage and have none of these issues. I mean they are pretty minor annoyances (they wont leave you stranded on the side of the highway) but if youd rather have engine and hvac problems, go for that audi .

Looks like the previous owner abused that car and your left with these issues. I bought my 2014 GS350 Luxury package with nearly zero miles on the odo and now my car has 121,600 exact miles on it and have Zero issues. My cousin bought a 2013 GS 350 Fsport and he had 145,500 miles on his and he takes his car to the race track for track days twice a month since he bought it brand new with less than 50 miles on the Odo and he only had to change out a bad thermostat and thats it.

Also keep in mind that the 2013 model year is the first model year this new generation is produced and first model years are usually made with some bugs and issues that are usually corrected in later years. Now if you had bought it brand new and have all these issues then you can say lexus reliability is poor but because its a used car you should not blame lexus for these problems because there is no guarantee way to tell if its a quality issue or previous owner abuse issue.

well it is the new gen but the 2013 used the 3rd gen powertrain, i think they took 2012 off to fix the oil consumptions the gs300 had. Not sure what is new with the 4th gens but i think 2014 and up had a slightly diffrent engine and a newer tranny.

The GS300 oil/carbon build up issue was on the 2006 GS. The issue was resolved with the 2007 GS350 engine which was in use from 2007 through 2015, without major issues.

I think you just have had a bad bit of luck with these particular items. From experience, the reputation of the brand creates this perception that almost "nothing" should happen to these bulletproof, reliable cars. I personally have not heard of these as common problems except for the radio button. I have a 2013 GS with 55k miles and have owned it for the last 3.5 years with none of the issues mentioned.

Is it a certified car or did you buy it from a private party? If its certified, then most of these items should be covered by your dealership or should have been inspected during the certification process. If its a private party or from a non-lexus dealership, then I agree with the sentiment that some of them could be because of neglect from the previous owner...

I would also inquire as to the past history of the car... I immediately thought flood damage. I would look into the car's history to see where it was sold and registered. If it is a flood car, there will be many more issues down the road.

Something should have happened to you car in the past. I have 84k+ miles on my GSh and not a single issue. Are you sure it doesn't have any unreported accident that was fixed up? chinee does bring up a good point about flood damage.

I wouldnt call 2 actuators at once a minor annoyance, those are expensive parts to replace. As far as the previous owner, its a one owner car with a spotless carfax and all service done at the Lexus dealer. That is the reason I chose this car. I didnt have this many problems in the 6 previous years with my Maxima.

Our 2013 GS350 F Sport with 60K has not been babied. Everything works perfectly.
I'll be crying at tire time, however.

Does Carfax shows it's a local car, i.e. TN?

I bought my GS 350F-Sport brand new in May, 2012. In six and a half years, I have only put 27,000 miles on the odometer (and on the entire car, for that matter.) During the first year, a front shock absorber “blew” and was replaced under warranty. The battery needed replacement at the six year service. Recently, the cruise control stopped working and the switch was replaced ($400+.)
