My 13 GS is putting out an incredible amount of brake dust at the front wheels since I changed them a couple of months ago. I replaced the originals with Auto Zone premium, which produced a crazy amount of dust. After about 2000 miles I switched back to Toyota original pads. The dust seems much worse than the first, original set of pads, even though both were Toyota brand. There has been no degradation in performance, and everything seems fine mechanically.

I am getting tired of seeing the wheels become black after a few days; I wash my car about once per week. Any ideas to reduce the dust? Thanks.

 

I am using the autozone cmax gold since 5k miles on the car...I have 15k on the clock and have zero dusting issues....

 

Have you thought about downshifting instead of braking?

 

I have the same issue on my 2016... Drives me freakin nuts... My friend warned me about the break dust issues that apparently Lexus is known for before I purchased the car. Didnt think it was that bad but it is... Very bad. I'm sure I could buy better break pads bit im tbinking I just bought the car a month ago and already changing breaks?? Hell nah!

 

i have the auto zone gold cmax almost new if anyone is interested .They have little to no brake dust.will sale for cheap!!!no longer have the car so i swapped the OEM pads back before i sold the car .

 

Brake dust issue is not only a Lexus issue, its way worse on BMW, Porsche, Audi where ever there is performance pads usually brake dust follows. I think BMW is the worst.

 

The brake dust isn't a Lexus issue, it's a by product of high performance brakes...you can live with it or you can swap out the pads like I did for no dust...the pads are around 60 bucks and it takes 30 min to swap them out

 

What kind are you using?

 

If this the type of advice your friend is giving then maybe we shouldnt ask him for advice any more or just stop inviting him over and get a new friend ...lmao jk man.
If he was saying this about ANY car the answer will still be the same, brake dust issues shouldnt deter you from getting a car, thats like not buying a house because the front door is red.


Anyways, this has been covered before. Basically you have 2 options:
1. OEM brakes
-softer
-more brake dust
-better stopping, especially on low speeds (this was covered by Porsche's brake specialist)
-intermittent squeaks

2. Ceramic brakes
-harder
-good stopping on faster speeds, not so much on super slow speeds (think red lights)
-much less brake dust

Ive owned both on my old IS and while Ive complained about brake dust on my GS I remember being at red lights and being unable to completely stop the car unless I dug my feet into the brake pedal.

Still though, seeing my black rims turn brown is annoying as f....

I used OEM Toyota pads.

Right. Like I said, that's what I did, but the dust was worse than stock, so I went back to stock, which still puts out lots of dust.

 

I don't think the brake dust is bad and I'm coming from Audi. Actually I don't have much brake dust on my 14 4GS. Hope when its time to do pads again I regret this statement.

 

None of my Lexus vehicles have had excessive brake dust. My RX has very little. My IS, which was not an F Sport, had hardly any at all, and my current GS (though it only has 2k miles so far) seems to keep the wheels pretty dust free as well.
