so went on a road trip this weekend and BAM, got a star shaped crack on my front windshield from a rock.

it seems like i have a couple of options...

- file a claim and get the windshield replaced. (500 deductible)
- see if i can get the windshield repaired (crack is kind of big so i doubt it)
- look for an OEM windshield replacement and pay out of pocket
- look for an aftermarket replacement and pay out of pocket

so here is my question for you guys? anyone know how much OEM front windshields cost? i know there are heating elements and i have the homelink option attached to my windshield as well. is it worth it look for aftermarket ones?

Forget the "repair" option; it never works with the type of crack you're describing.

I had the same thing happen almost two years ago and got an OEM replacement installed; I'll dig up my invoice and let you know what it cost the insurance company.

 

I'd get a new one. And make absolutely sure you get an OEM windshield, NOT an aftermarket windshield.

My repair was close to $2,000 and insurance covered everything. The installer fu**d up the car a little, but that's a different story.

My oem windshield cost about $2199 installed by local glass repair shop. My insurance said I cannot have oem glass and must get oem equivalent glass. I fought them by calling them and complaining to them like 10 times and they eventually gave in and repairedy windshield with LEXUS stamped OEM glass. Dont take NO for an answer.

Also my deductible was only $500.

You should never get OEM Equivalent glass because i have done that befpre and recieved a defective one several times. Both had glass with distortions and was not as clear as the real OEM one that was 100% crystal clear with zero distortions. The distortions on the Pilkington equivalent glass was so distorted I had to have it removed and replace with oem.

Even if the Lexus stamped OEM glass is also made by pilkington, there is beter quality control over at lexus that you will be sure it will not have any defects. Lexus adheres to a more strict quality control than the same glass coming straight out of the pilkington factory and straight to glass repair shop.

 

Go thru your insurance will be cheaper with $500 deductible than spending 2k+

 

I took a former Lexus to Safelite Autoglass for a windshield replacement and they screwed it up bad. Did $800 of damage to the window frame and interior molding. I would never take a chance with them again. Finally went to my Lexus dealer who repaired the damage and did an excellent job. Don't go "cheap" trying to save a few bucks. Bad idea.

 

Hmm...you must live in a state where windshield replacements aren't free. If you have "full" coverage, there is no charge (where I live).*

*Not sure how that works when you demand factory glass and not the cheap replacement crap.

I would definitely submit that to your insurance. Factory windshield will be > $2,000

 

My windshield was replaced by a Safelite in South San Francisco in August 2013. OEM glass was $1,666.81. Moldings were $40.59, labor was $132. Workmanship was excellent, no issues since. My out of pocket was $50.

 

Another reason to get the OEM glass is the Lexus warranty, if still applicable it will apply to the replacement. If you go aftermarket the OEM Lexus warranty will not apply. Your insurance rates are based on OEM replacement parts not aftermarket.

OEM windshield replacement cost too much than aftermarket because these are identical to the original windshield installed by the car factories.
