Default Engine Ticking at idle...normal?

Hello all,

I have noticed a slight engine tick at idle. At first, I thought maybe the dealer filled up my new car with 87 gas instead of premium. Now I am at 2000 mi and there is still that slight tick...

Mentioned it to my dealer, and they told me it's because of fuel injection? I said BS to that but....

Is this a normal symptom of our cars? Thanks in advance!

I believe it's normal especially when warming up, as it sounds like a diesel engine. In my case, once it warms up it goes away.

From what i was told by Lexus Master Technician is the 3,5L V6 engines that are in IS and GS have a high fuel pressure system which produce the ticking sound and it is normal to do that.

Highly annoying and embarrassing, but what I am told it is normal. But, someone above mentioned once the car warms up it goes away, that is not true in my case. When other people are driving my car and I am outside, and they pull up or drive away i definatley hear the ticking.

To go into more detail. There are 12 injectors. 6 Port and 6 Direct. (Different sizes and flows)
The 2GR-FSE plant which is in (2nd gen IS350's and 350c's, 3rd gen GS350's, 450h's, 4th gen GS350, *4th gen GS450h and RX450h's use the same plant except the Atkinson cycle and Cooled EGR)

Works like this. (99% sure this is correct)

At low RPM (speed) the port injectors and Direct Injectors work simultaneously, hence why it sounds like mini muffled claymore mines going off under the hood. At high RPM (speed) the computer switches over to 100% direct injection (pretty sure synchronous with the VVTi compensating A/F ratio).

Noisy as it is... its still rated as one of the best engines made by Wards.

Mine does not go away either. When I pull in the garage from a long drive it is still ticking away.

Are you talking about after you shut off the car?

It ticks both while it's running and when I shut it off. Sounds like two different noises. When the car is shut off it is almost an aluminum pinging. Maybe the manifold?

If the ticking while the car is running comes from the front of the car (fuel injectors) and the ticking when the car has just been shut off comes from underneath/behind the car (exhaust system cooling down) then I think everything is okay.

Bottom line, the noise is normal and a part of the nature of the D4-S injection.

It's not that encouraging to hear about the ticking noise. I'll need to take notice of it the next time I go for a another test drive to see if it's anything significant.
