Could you post links to forum discussions on hacking a 3rd generation GS with the 4th Gen of the navigation software? I know that there are some changes that require an interface, software, and a subscription. I also know that there are some tricks that you can do without the interface and the software.
I just dropped my GS off for a recall and I asked them about making some changes. They charge $138 to hook up the car and change any number of preferences (they gave me a list). If the cost of the interface, software, and one month's subscription is less, I would seriously consider that route.
The main thing I want the dealer to do is deactivate the auto-tilt/telescope wheel. I know from reading the forum that the system is very durable, but I am a spry 59 year old and I would be happy not putting wear and tear on the power systems.
Other changes I want to do:
update the 4th Gen nav DVD (image of the current DVD below)
mud guards/flaps;
install an iPod adapter (for 4th/5th generation iPod classic);
Please let me know how you make out with this I am curious the interface on the third GEN is terriblePlease let me know how you make out with this I am curious the interface on the third GEN is terrible

Sadly, you can't update the interface; just the maps. The dealer wanted $307 to update the navigation. They would not be updating the system; merely updating the maps. My car has generation 4 of the navigation software; the dealer told me the last update was the 2016. Data Version 15.1. I just bought a disc for $10 on ebay.
There are plenty of videos on how to update the maps.
I remember awhile back guys used to hack their cars where they would disconnect the gps in the car and where able to play through your phone onto the oem screen. I forgot what the module product name was, but it involved some a good bit of work to get it going.
