Default Rear window defroster pulling away?

Hey guys. 2006 GS430, 166k miles. Car has been garaged its entire life.

It looks like one of the lines of the rear window defroster is pulling away, but I’m not sure. Is this something that I can just stick back in place? There is a break in the line at the left end of it. Is there a circuit issue here if the loop isn’t closed? Here is a picture.

From dealing with older cars my experience is that you can fix the broken circuit with special liquid, I think permatex still sells it. As for the peeling away part see if you can gently put it back in its place and using the same liquid to hold it there. If not maybe you can try superglue

Thanks ibidu1. I don’t know for sure if the circuit is broken. I’m just assuming it is because I thought that the part that’s peeling away from the glass is the circuit, and if there a break in the line, that would mean the circuit is open and the defroster won’t work. It’s possible that the stuff that’s peeling away is just insulating tape to cover the actual wire that heats up on the glass, in which case I just need to figure out a way to re-adhere the tape line to the glass, if that makes sense.

The other thing is that the area is right behind the third brake light. I remember on my 98 and 99 GS400s, the brake light could be removed by sliding it one way or the other and then removing it. I assume the light is removed the same way on the 2006.

That peeled strip looks like copper strip, so if that line is torn then yes more likely the circuit just in that line will break and not defrost. I doubt the whole rear defrost will stop working.

That 3rd brake like many are easily removable for tint guys, you might be able to remove the whole light. Tear into it and see

Thank you. If it’s just that line and not the whole rear window, then I’m not as concerned. I’ll just figure out a way to reattach it and hope for the best.

If theres 2 thick strips on each side, and all those lines attach to it, then it should kill the whole circuit.

Can this possibly be right, that the third brake light is permanently affixed to the rear deck and the fasteners need to be sheared off?

That sucks that the light is fixed to the shelf, but instead of sheering the light off, you can just remove the rear parcel shelf with the light attached to it to give you access. Most likely you will need to pop off the lower rear seat/then back half of the seat/side trim then the shelf could be removed then.

This happened to my gs350, only 60k miles. The whole defroster lines have pulled away. The car has never been garaged. Only some areas of the defroster work. I guess i just live with it.

This must have happened to my IS of the same vintage.

@e-man What did you end up doing?

I ended up just leaving it be. The rear defroster seems to be working fine.

@e-man , Did you just reattach the lines onto the glass?

I literally just left it alone. It seemed to be working fine and my attitude is if it’s not broken don’t try to fix it because then something else will go wrong.

Thank You @e-man . Mine, is actually missing the loose hanging wires. They may have been damaged/missing from when I have the car washed and detailed or when they put the rear tint.
