Hey Guys... Just wanted some input from the Lexus experts. Over the weekend drove my GS out of town about 100 miles and the GS ran perfect. On the way home stopped at a Starbucks drive through and noticed the fans were blowing faster/louder than normal. Temp gauge was still normal. Drove home successfully and still heard the fans blowing really loud when I got home! I did notice my AC was blowing cold air even though I had the temp set to 80.

Drive my car the following day and everything is normal. I still hear the fans blowing louder than they should. No errors are reported and temp appears to be normal. Following morning I notice a puddle of coolant leaking from the my car. I didnt check levels and since I was late to work. As I drive to work. I hear the fans again but temps still normal.

On my way home make a pitstop 3 miles away from home and see smoke coming from engine one I turn off the engine. Got under the hood and noticed the Coolant reservoir empty. I didnt check Radiator fluid since engine was hot. I came back 30 minutes later and there is a puddle under my car. At this point I just wanted to make it home. Im about 3 miles out and sure enough my car temp spikes up.

I made it home and this is where I am at. I'm planning to check under the hood first thing in the morning as this is already late here. What do I need to do first under the hood? Forgive my ignorance. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

 

check the front this is where the water pump and thermostat is look down around the crank pulley to see any pink residue. also on top is the pressure cap, if this fails coolant can leak out of it and cause overheating

I did have coolant leak recently and several other members had the same leak from the same place. check the top radiator plastic cover.

 

Check the water pump area...look for signs of coolant running down the crank pulley. Also inspect both the upper and lower tanks of the radiator. Make sure you also check all coolant hoses as they are probably the original ones and are over 10 years old.

Hopefully you haven't cause any damage but you should never have driven the car without at least checking the coolant level. Please take this as a lesson learned. These engines do not like to be overheated at all.

 

These cars have every toy and sensor but lack a coolant level indicator!

 

Agreed, but they do have a coolant temp gauge which gives you a real good indication of the coolant level. These engines are aluminum which is highly prone to damage due to overheating. Anyone that continues to drive their car after it has overheated (empty coolant reservoir, smoke from engine compartment) Is just asking for a very expensive result. The original poster is darn lucky he didn't warp a head and blow a head gasket.
