Need a highway warrior
I’ve been doing a bit of driving lately and I figure it might be more financially feasible to buy a used car than continue renting cars for 4 months out of the year. I like the body style of the 3rd gen GS but I’m open to other generations and models (ie LS, NX200, etc). I don’t need much interior space; just using the back seats for a dog.
Here are my ranking in priorities of what I’d like in a vehicle:
-reliablility
-safety
-handling
-decent acceleration (merging into traffic)
-ok ground clearance (probably lower it .5-1” with KW coilovers if anything)
-not too concerned about tech/amenities (probably upgrade the stereo)
-mpg (high would be nice)
What have been your experiences with the Lexus models?
Budget is around 30k but flexible. Car will only be driven in warm weather.

My 08 gs350 has 170k miles and its my highway warrior. These cars are solid with very little issues if you keep up good maintenance. 07-up GS350 2wd preferaby or awd. 2013-up are the same mechanically aswell, if you wanted to pay extra! Both are great on gas! Both are fast for being sedan daily drivers.
Around 90k miles it best to replace the water pump as preventive measures. Aisin pumps on ebay are probably going for less then $100 bucks and do not take much time to replace.

GS350, GS430, or GS460. Pick your poison
GS450h you'll be dealing with hybrid battery packs/hybrid peripherals (my uncle ran up a $25,000 lexus bill over the years since his hybrid system took doodoo's on him a couple times, his car is under 100k still)
GS300 has carbon build-up problems (however, my friend who has one at 240k still doesn't have any problems besides transmission problems, which was fixed at a trans shop... He also abuses the car a lot....).
GS350 majority of folks drive this car here, any the problems with these vehicles are little to non-existent.
GS460/430 was Lexus/Toyota's flagship engines that they've put into their trucks, SUVs, and sedans, so you're looking at real reliability with these two engine variants.
Hope this helps, GL!

'07 GS350, RWD, 90k miles. Drove it cross-country four times, up and down the CA. coast twice. Purchased new. NEVER had a problem.
Thought I would replace it after ten years (never had a car this long), so went looking at new GS350's, as I wanted exactly what I had.
I could not (and I tried) accept the hideous 'cow catcher' front end. Looks like I may have my '07 for another 10 years!

Lead Lap
The 460 has an 8-speed, as well as a butter smooth 4.6L V8, so merging is always fun. I got 29.1 MPG on my 5-hour road trip out to Spokane, WA a couple years back, and that's with a solid 60 min of going uphill through the mountain passes, before it flattened out a bit, plus my fiancee and tons of luggage. Overall, I couldn't be more happy with my car, but they are VERY rare (little over 1,600 ever made), so it might be difficult finding a good one. Can't go wrong with a 350 or 430, but the 430 in the 3rd gen body is still pretty rare.

different strokes for different folks...but I wouldn't spend 30k on a Lexus and then carry my dog in the back seat. As for your requirements, you can achieve all of those with a Honda Accord. I've got a 09' GS 350 with just under 138k and I love it, but I can honestly say it's not been as reliable as my old Honda Accord that still runs reliably with 320k miles on it. I've replaced the water pump and the alternator on this GS (in the last 55k miles). I did nothing other than regular maintenance on the Honda except for timing belt (every 105K) until it was over 200k. That said, the GS is much more enjoyable to drive. It's a damn solid car. For $30k and used...you have a LOT of options. My brother has the LS 460 and that is a wonderful highway car. You could pick one of those up used and in mint condition for $30 or less.
