Smile DO I need to replace my Front RH shock (pics)

HI Everyone
I am new here and would like to say hello to you guys.
I just had my GS450H (2008 82000KM) serviced with Lexus dealer recently.
They told me that the front RH shock need to be replaced due to oil leak. I was also told that it would not affect driving safety.
I have attached the pictures of my shock.
Is it necessary to replace the shock?

Thanks your comments in advance!

It's hard to tell from the pictures but it does look like the housing is covered in a layer of dirt. It's time to replace. I would replace both front shocks.

If it drives fine, I wouldnt bother with it. If the drive is bouncy and annoying go ahead and swap them out. Youre pretty low as far as mileage on them, I wouldnt worry about small oil seeping on one side, you still have plenty of life left.

I just got my 2007 GS350 yesterday.
Driving on the highway today I notice very slightly that the right front of the car is bouncing very slightly on rebound. I pulled off the wheel and it doesn't seem to be wet dripping with oil, just rusty, and the boot torn. I'm going to have to put new shocks on it soon.

226,000km.

I have checked with the local mechanic, he told me the same thing. He said he won't replace his shocks until he can feel the bouncing.

Leaking shocks is normal. They will all leak and eventually go bad. You do not need to replace until they start to bounce.

Well I was thinking of the KYB Gas A Just shocks they have on RockAuto, but now I'm reading they'll be very firm. I don't want to break out the bank for dealership struts.

KYB gas a just is oem, I placed both side by side everything identical even the valving, Both had same compression and rebound

KYB "aftermarket" gas a just will only sell to 2wd 3gs's without comfort adjusters. If you have the adjusters you can still use KYB but you will not be able to adjust them. If you have an AWD, you can only use rear shocks.

A whole set of kyb's can be found for about $300-$500

Thanks for this information, good to know. I have RWD without AVS so that should work for me.
Have you tried the gas a just struts from KYB on your car to see the difference in ride quality?

Yes I had an issue I was chasing with rear tire wear, I ended up replacing the rear shocks, thinking my old pair was bad (it wasnt) I put them both side by side and pushed down to test the compression and rebound both were identical. They're the same shocks as oem!

Some struts when they wear or have worn out show signs or symtoms of a more harsh ride and not so much bounce as the older struts would indicate. The newer KYB's leak and they become very stiff and harsh when thier in need of replacement .. I beleive this is true with most new struts out there now.
