Default DIY Custom single 12" Box

i decided to got with a single 12" woofer to save on weight (since a 2 speaker setup requires 2 speaker frames which is about 50% the weight of the speaker). i also decided to use 1/2 inch MDF instead of 3/4 to shave 33% of the weight off. i don't recommend you using 1/2" mdf unless your cuts are good, your screws are perfectly centered, and you use Liquid nails on every seam and internal crack of the box. the dimensions are W30.5xH14.5xL13. i couldnt find the exact drawing for this box but HERES the original write up for this box. The difference is the the amount of airspace. and the port and speaker location which shouldnt be hard to change. it should fit nice and snug in the narrow section of your trunk.. i have an 06 gs430

Nice! I have a box with similar dimensions but with about 20" width. Houses my 12" JL W3 and it hits so cleanly!

once again here is the link for the write up of the box. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1o...GpyY2ZUUlAxZjQ
if you take this to any lowes or home depot they can cut it out for you for free(if they not trying to be lazy) and you can just get to screwing it together. you will still need a jigsaw to do the cutouts

doesn't lowes and home depot cut extremely sloppy though? That was my experience when doing a box for my JL 12w7.

For the 1/2in MDF, do you think that would be sufficient for a RE XXX? You must have some mad bracing skills!

I have a DIY box myself, most deefinitely going to trash it and start over (it was my first box, not perfect at all, and it was cut by home depot too! =[ )

i build boxes often. i use to be the lead tech at an audio shop before my career started.
At Lowes im always next to the guy using the saw and i always draw the lines that i tell him to cut. SN. make sure he cuts on the opposite side of the piece you want because the blade takes off 1/8th of an inch. but the guys sometimes dont know how to use a saw so it might be safe to cut it yourself if you dont wanna take chances. This box is capable of withstanding a XXX speaker at long as it stays ported. Also i've never built a box that i had to trash or wasnt satisfied with

That's awesome! I have a one sided port tuned to i believe 30 or 28 Hz, the sundown SD-12 still manages to flex the box! (hence why i'm going to do a rebuild with stronger material).

I will follow your guide and make my calculations and drawings there on the spot! the guy at home depot last time (when I requested it) just listened to my dimensions and cut randomly, nothing turned out right and I was very dissatisfied. maybe the reason why is that I didn't make cutouts for him to follow in. WILL DO ON MY NEXT PROJECT!

yea. and notice how i made a center line for all of my screws, i didn't mis-drill a single screw.(this is very important and i used 1-5/8" screws)

I noticed! hence the insane precision! Question.... When you put those screws, did you self-tap it with the screw? Or did you do pre-drilling?

Looks great, but it also looks like you need to do some clay-barring and polishing on that rear bumper!
