Default 450h High Beam HID upgrade

Hello,

I just sold my 04 GS300 and purchased an 07 GS450h. I have HID kits from my 2gen GS HB/LB and FOGS. I only keep these cars for a year or so, but I really cant stand the stock DTR Lights. I know there is excessive literature on this topic, which I've read, but I just need a confirmation. I dont mind the stock Low Beam, I can live with it for a year. The fogs I will upgrade with one of my HID kits.

So my question is, and I could not find anything on someone doing this, has anyone putting an HID kit in their High beams and then running a different bulb for parking lights. Can I upgrade my HB to an HID kit? If I do this wouldnt a new parking light then outshine the DTRL because an HID kit in the high beam will not put out light like stock correct? By doing this could I avoid having the DTRL turned off?

If I just have DTRL turned off by dealer and upgrade the parking light to my taste will I still be able to throw my highs on?

Thank you very much with your time. I am very impressed with how some of your lights have come out.

Best Regards

You can definitely turn off the DRL and still use your highbeam. But remember, HID need time to warm up so it will not be as bright when you just quickly flick your highbeam on. And also, I'm not sure if flickering on and off is good for HID bulbs either.

Thanks for the response. So I can safely upgrade my stock high beams to HID? I understand what you're saying about taking time to warm up and flickering back and forth, but I'm not worried about the HID kit, just dont want to do any damage to the car or its wiring. Thanks

I'm pretty sure HID kit wont do any damage to the wiring since it runs much cooler than regular bulbs.

Am I on the right track with not needing to turn of DTRL if I upgrade my HB to an HID kit. Its my understanding that the DTRL do not show with an HID kit....giving the Parking light bulb superiority in the housing until high beams are flicked on.

Thanks people!!

If DRL is not switched off it will trigger the HID kit in your HB to come on.. IF DRL is not required by law then I would have it turned off by the dealer and you will have no issues running your 9005 HID kit in your HB.

You have to have it turned off if you do not have a relay kit. Otherwise the low voltage of the DRLs will flicker your HID kit on and off constantly, eventually shorting out the system or ruining the ballast. That's what happened when I first installed the HID kit, the lights flickered at very low voltage.

Thank you for the response. Luckily my local dealer said they would turn of DTRL at the drive through service for no charge....and I was ready to do some serious arguing

Even if you don't have DRL's in your high beam installing an HID kit is not ideal for high beam use due to the warm up period. The HID lights would not be very functional in the event that you need a quick, short burst of light. I would look into Osram Night Breaker Plus halogen bulbs, the GS450H uses 9005 bulbs for the high beams.
