No engine problems correct? ONe thing I did notice was a some what loud TICK when it was in idle is this normal?
The REC is the ventilation/climate recirculating function and the same button will switch to the fresh air function. The car automatically starts in the REC mode. so just make sure you press it 2x to switch it over to fresh air. drive around and switch back to REC, then back again, and turn the A/C on as well. You'll hear the motorized arm behind the glove compartment move up and down. The jackhammer noise is unmistakeable if the arm is in fact broken.

As for the engine, I've not had any problems. I'm not versed with the loud tick at idle, so hopefully someone else in this forum can help you out. Ask Twong1200. he's my good friend and was a Toyota master mechanic in a former life! He's also a moderator in this forum.

I thought the problem was fixed, but the noise came back 2 wks later. since I bought it used, and opted not to purchase the extended warranty, I'm now screwed. The noise is inconsistent as I can go a full week without a problem.
Someone recently posted a fix using epoxy for the broken clip that is the cause of the noise.

Also, my side mirror gears broke down 2 wks after I bought the car so when I took it in, the dealership did cover the cost of that. However, my glove wasn't making the rattle at the time, so they couldn't justify fixing it as well. These were the only problem I've had. It's an 07, fully loaded, rwd, 31k miles. Good luck!
It costs Lexus 400 bucks to repair the broken mirror gears. under EW for my car. Would cost me more if out of my pocket.
Lexus Corp. also picked up the tab for fixing the front brake squealing noise for the third time.
They didn't have to because the car had 60k miles.

The body style itself should age well, as with most older Lexus models. The new one will obviously be more "stylish" but I don't think the 3GS would look that outdated because of it.
