advisor called me back and i asked him what was bad on the rack and all he said was the rack. i asked him well was it the tie rod, ball joint, what. all he said was the rack. he said they put it in the air and turned the rack and heard the noise so their conclusion was it was the whole rack

the car will go to a local toyota dealer for a second opinion.

i am going to try and fight for it to get replaced though even though the 12 month warranty is up. the rack is basically new.

**update**

well turns out i found my extended warranty so the part is covered (thank god) but heres where it gets strange.

Picked the car up on 11/19 and showed him the extended warranty and he tells me lets make an appointment for after the holiday so i drop my car off sunday during the day (11/29) and leave my paper work in the car. All day Monday goes by and i dont get a call from him. So as im leaving work at 5pm i give him a call. He says he spoke to the extended warranty company and they agreed to cover it (great!). I say ok and he mentions he will need the car til the end of the week since the part will come in 3-4 days. No problem, i got a second car to drive so it doesnt bother me, as long as its getting done.

Fast foward a week later, car should have been done 12/3 or 12/4 (saturday) at the latest. Didnt get a call so again i call on Monday (12/6) and he says yes the car is done, you can pick it up today. Great no problem. I mention to him to let me know because i need someone to drop me off to get the car since i do not have a loaner. As im on the phone with a customer, i get a voicemail from him saying the car is running rough and throwing codes and it needs a whole new ecu . strange but ok i'll play along. He says he overnited the part and it will be done the next day (12/7).

So Tuesday goes by and once again no call. So i call around 3pm to ask if we are still good to pick the car up today. He says they will need it til later in the week because the ecu will take 3-4 days to get (wait a minute, yesterday he said he over nighted the part, today he says it will be 3-4 days). I didnt say anything about that to him and just said ok let me know by th end of the week.

So at this point im a little concerned. It went in for a simple rack and pinion (which they did previously under a recall and it caused no problems) and now all of a sudden its throwing codes and the computer needs to be replaced? Something doesnt seem right. He said it was covered under my lexus warranty but im past the 4yr/50k warranty and i dont think an ecu is covered by powertrain. I let it slide twice with them telling me the car will be ready and it wasnt. At this point im hoping not to get the run around when i call on Friday. If the same bs story goes on, i think i will have to stop in and have a chat to find out what really going on. Just thought i'd share

Sounds fishy. You might want to make time to go in personally and take a look at your car to see that it's there and all in one piece.

I had the ECU replaced on my 06 when I brought it in for the idling rough thing, but that was part of a TSB for a bad O2 sensor. The O2 sensors were replaced with a redesigned kind that required a new ECU to be able to read them... I'm not aware of any other requirement for ECU replacement.

I've got another 10 months to decide on the extended warranty thing. I'm starting to think it's a good idea but I'm not sure if there are powertrain only extensions from Lexus and whether or not there is any plan that is worth it for my driving habits which are very few miles per year. Ideally, I want a long term low mileage extension - I doubt it exists.
