Default Air duct joint in middle console

Hi all,

I've notice that when I have my heat on, the ashtray for the cig gets hot. Now it's summer and I notice when I have the AC on, this ashtray gets cold. Is it suppose to be like this?

Anyway, I opened the middle console and I think this is the cause... does your GS have this area sealed or taped so the air won't leak out?

Thanks.

WOW that's a lot of rust!!!! mine is definitely not rusted. of all the cars i have worked on, i remember seeing 2 with rust, one from seattle (humid) and one local. but both weren't as bad.

regarding the duct, i don't think mine is seal either

yea that rust isnt good...

I've taken one apart. There is foam tape on the inside to help prevent when you slide them together. Tape would be a PITA to wrap around the bottom portion. It wont hurt if you want to try to put tape

Thanks guys for the reply. I really don't know why mine is rust like this. Could it be the AC also have something to do with the rust, moisture form on cold metal and so it rust?

Does yours have a coating to prevent rust?

How about the AC? Does yours get really cold around this area when you have the AC on for awhile?

i don't recall it getting very cold, but then again weather is sort of "mild" here these days so it's hard to say. if i get a chance (as in if i still have my car....) i can try to blast the a/c and see

Thanks buddy.

Weather here is getting chilly now too. I notice this mostly in summer when AC on full blast (auto mode), and in Winter when heater on full blast (auto mode).

I think I gonna head to homedepot and buy some air vent tape and see if I can tape this area. The thing is, the car get much hotter than the house air vent. If I'm lucky I might be able to remove this metal too and see if I can paint or coat it to prevent farther rusting.

it's just surface rust, it will probably take another 30 years before it starts crumbling at that rate.

I'll bet the rust is present because of the AC cooling that bracket, which causes "sweating" after the AC is off. I would tape the joint with some duct tape. I understand you won't be able to completely seal it, but the duct tape will significantly reduce the air leak.
