Default Wheel Blues

Sometimes I hate multipiece wheels. One of my wheels was leaking air and is being repaired. So many people on enthusiast site talk about the superiority of multipiece wheels when for the most part, they are a pain in the neck.
I haven't had a set yet that didn't have some kind of issues. 1 piece cast are 100 times more durable but just for that look, we suffer with these wheels because of the pissing contest we post adolescent males play with each other.
One thing, I'm a little suspicious of the wheel shop. I think it's awfully coincidental that this happened after they installed 2 tires for me. How does a leak magically pop up after the installation? I know for a fact some of the people there don't like me. They've said it.
I only went there because they supposedly have a better alignment machine than the dealer. I can't prove it so I can't pursue this....but it is definitely a huge coincidence.

Sucks Reggie, GL on the fix. Is Andy handling it? If you take it to him, he has a mount and balance machine now so he can do it all in one shot.

Sometimes when installing/changing tires they mess up the silicon bead which is to prevent leaking with the 3 piece (barrels), usually carelessness.

umm, i guess it has something to do with luck. i have had 6 sets of wheels on my cars, all 2/3 piece setup. i have never had a leak on any of my wheels

eric, the silicon bead, you mean the one where they seal the connection where the pieces meet? that's pretty center on the barrel, must be quite some mistake to damage those

I agree and that's why I think one of the guys did somethng purposely. I've had other issues with multipiece whells but not leaking. If it's done properly it should never leak...and the seal is too far from the edge to carelessly hit. I should have insisted on having them break down the wheel in my presense so that I could check it out.

Eric, Andy is too far away from me. Homestead is what....50 something miles from me. Maybe more. And I would need multiple trips. You can't just remount after it's just been sealed.

it really depends on what the leak is. putting the wheel under water to is always a good start to find out where it is leaking, before dismounting the tire

Like Henry, I've had numerous sets multi-piece wheels with zero issues. Sounds like sabotage to me or poor build quality.

Not really, just drop the wheel off with the tire on and he will take care of it all including letting the seal dry before putting the tire back on.
