Default check engine and brake system lights

to my dismay this morning when i started the car i got two lights for the first time:

the check engine light and the one to the left of it - the brake system light

this is a 2006 gs 300 awd with 36,000 miles. just bought used from a dealer a couple of weeks ago

anyone have any idea what this could be with this limited info? the brakes seem fine on the car and visually it has plenty of life left

i'm getting regular mpg of around 23 mixed.

if i take this to lexus service will the diagnosis be free? i have until next may on the warranty

If the car is still under warranty there should be no charge at the Lexus dealer

more than likely you didnt put your gas cap on tight enough. this is very common with new people on the board. i admit, i had the same problem when i first got my car. lexus also has a factory 50k mile warranty so dont worry about it.

i thought i closed the gas cap sufficiently. the light came on a good 75 miles after the gas fill-up. but that would address only the check engine light, right?

what about the brake system light? hmm.. let me go check my brake lights and report back. but i wouldn't think it was a coincidence for these to appear simultaneously.

it takes a while for the error to cycle through. the check engine light automatically comes on when the vsc light comes on.

well the car's been dropped off. also got a free bottle of kirkland water.

the new es350 is pretty fast! but so simple inside. think i prefer the gs overall.

ah. the problem was the seal on the gas cap, and not how i closed it! haha. supposedly it was a $225 repair including labor and part, and i just paid $5 for the loaner.

this time took another bottle of costco water and a banana.

your car has 36k on it. you should of not had to pay for anything. it cost 28 bucks for a new gas cap. i know because my dealer was being a **** to me about fitting me in to replace the cap and told me they had nothing open for 2 weeks. i bought the cap and replaced it in a matter of a min.
