Default Thoughts on 5K maintenance...

Purchased my car new in mid-September. I don't drive it very much...work is 8 miles round trip. I've got about 2500 miles on it, but time-wise it's been 5 months. Car arrived at the dealership a few days before I bought it, so I think build date was late July....to put in perspective how long the current oil has been in the car. Should I do the maintenance now, or am I good to wait until the 5000 mile mark? Also being that this service is free, will Lexus even do the work if the car isn't at or around 5K miles?

Thanks for all advice!

If the oil was only used for about 2500miles, then I dont think it matters how long its been in the car, you still have 2500+ miles left.

Oil change interval is every 5000 miles or every 6 months which ever comes first. Make a appointment with your dealer to change your oil and tell him what personalize setting you want change.

I would also ask them to put synthetic oil in. You would have to bring it with you, because they don't mind putting it in, but they will only pay for the regular oil.

I know some people say you can put in synthetic oil at anytime, but in my opinion, 2500 is too soon. The engine is not fully broken in yet.

What makes you think that you cant brake the engine in using synthetic? Many high end (Corvette, BMW) engines require synthetic only. I can't find a single disadvantage of synthetic vs regular. If you can think of any, let me know. Seriously, I am not trying to sound sarcastic or a smart a$$, I just couldn't find any.

arnieosp, you are right. Newer cars comes with tighter engine tolarance, so its less important to wait til later to change over to synthetic.

If I buy synthetic, how long can I store it before it should be used? I'm looking at buying in bulk.

Thanks!

I've never heard of an expiration date on oil.

go get your first oil change with conventional oil and go again at 6 or 7 k and get a synthetic oil change. Just bring your oil and ask for an oil change not a 5k service...then you can go again around 10k ....I would simply do changes every 5k miles, I also have a short commute and put about 7000 miles a year and do oil changes with Mobil 1 5-20 synthetic every 6-8 months....since it is synthetic I dont worry about the 6 month thing...in fact you can probably go longer than 5k but just go 5k....your car will have like 30k miles when the next gen GS is released

Why would you want to do that? The 5K miles service is free, unless you buy the synthetic. At 6 or 7K you will have to pay for it.

He should probably get an oil change soon, and since you only get one free service (your first), it makes no sense to take them sythetic at this point, let lexus buy your first oil change and oil, its fine if its conventional at this point....then you get another one 4k miles later and put in synthetic. You cant wait till 10k for your 2nd service if you get one now...comprende?

I am getting close to needing the 10K service on my 08 GS350. I would like to switch to synthetic oil, but am not sure if I should just do it myself or have the dealership do it. I know the dealership charges around $150 for oil change (non synthetic) & a tire rotation. I suspect they would charge $200+ for synthetic. I can do the change myself for less than $50. Anyone have the dealer do synthetic & know how much extra they charge? Thanks.

bring them your oil and ask for an oil change, they will charge you labor only...about 40-50 bucks...
