So C&D did a short test of the 2008 GS460. Pretty much what you'd expect them to say... nice car, could be more sporty, blah blah blah.
Anyway, the GS460 got a 0 to 60 in 5.5s. I was expecting it to be a bit faster (340 hp, 8 speed auto), especially from C&D, which seems to get the fastest 0-60 times in general.
But this is only one test. Perhaps it'll be faster in other tests.
in the performance aspect yes. Especially since the 2GS was a fast car...relatively speaking and for its time. I'd love to own a GS450h though.
Well both the GS 430 and GS 460 haven't packed quite the V8 that many of us think they should, but let's not forget that the GS 350 AWD knocked off a 0-60 time of 5.4 in that road and track test.
IMO, yeah the V8 GSs have been a bit lame but hard to ignore the GS 350 and GS 450h. Great cars.
I read that article, they also only managed 16mpg which is terrible fuel economy for a midsize sedan and 1mpg worse then the GS430 even though the GS460 has an improved engine and the new 8 speed transmission all while only being .2 seconds quicker to 60 then the 430 and slower then the v6 GS350 which is really dissapointing. If I was in the market I would definitely get the 350 over the 460 because it is quicker(the awd 350 was able to get a 5.3 second 0-60 which does seem a little hard to believe considering power/weight of the car but it is still a time that was supposidly acheived) and more importantly the 350 does or should get much better fuel economy even with a 6 speed auto and will be much less expensive. Seems like the 8 speed is overkill and not really helping performance or fuel economy and people are complaining about multiple kickdowns when passing and constant shifting. With all the issues and problems the new GS has been having, a version even being put on the not recommended list on consumer reports because of so many problems, its lukewarm reviews, and it not really selling in high numbers this current GS is a pretty big dissapointment and Lexus needs to really step up its game for the next one.

this is why i never pay attention to any magazine article and just rely on a single source for performance data (usually on the conservative side anyway) in this case, the lexus data.
GS460 is 150lbs heavier than the GS350 and it's 5.4s vs 5.7s in the 350 because the condition in which the cars are tested are controlled. I can tell you in real life that the 460 is faster because we have GS300/350/430/460 from our employee and i am getting 24.7 MPG with 70% highway 30% local. 8SP is perfect for fuel economy, think 2500rpm at 90mph.
turn on the sport mode and the shifting changes, GS350 has no chance.
Also i believe the consumer reports of it being not recommended applied to the GS350 AWD only.
i really want to hear their explanation on a detuned engine
My guess is they didn't feel the chassis was up to it and they didn't want to spend more money making it so.
Thinking back to getting my GS400 - I remember how after a month or two of owning I distinctly felt the engine WAY overpowered the pillow soft suspension and flimsy sway bars to the point of it feeling unsafe. The car of course was transformed with new TRD bars and Tein coilovers but that's a different story.
With gas prices now triple what they were when I got my GS400 in late '99, the GS460, with almost no improvement in performance, is not a compelling proposition. Nice car, but not great. In a way it kind of reminds me now of how I felt about the first gen GS which was EXPENSIVE in its time, and underpowered.
