Default Michelin vs. Bridgestone

Guys,

I have about 13.5K miles on my '06 GS430. Ive noticed a considerable amount of noise coming from what im sure are my tires. Its so noisy, and annoying. I hate that i can hear these noises coming from my baby. It is like they are screaming to be replaced. So for the past week, i have been looking at tires. I've read a few reviews, but havent really anything i was looking for. The two models that i think i will choose from would be the Michelin Pilot Sports, or the Bridgestone Pole Positions. Reading the reviews, ive seen people say that theyve driven thousands of miles on the pilot sports. Ive seen some numbers like 46k. Now if this is the case, i think i would go for that. Since these AVS start sounding off at 13k. I know i will only receive opinions, but I just want to hear what you guys think of these tires on and off this vehicle. Actually anything would be appreciated guys, especially the long rants, and raves im used to reading. Thanks in advance.

Default Bridgestones

I just replaced the factory Dunlops with the Bridgestone Pole Positions from tire rack.com. Must say they are definitely quieter! Good looking and affordable tire.

@redwhisky - not enough time in the seat or mileage racked up on my Michelin Pilot Sports, but so far I love them.... I drove an 06 GS300 for about 2,500 miles with the Yoko Advans on it, and I much prefer these Michelins.... def. quieter and better handling (though to be fair, the 06 was riding on 17" rims while my 07 has 18"). I've also read great things about the Bridgestones too, so either one would be a great choice for your upgrade IMO...

Don't get your hopes up on the tread wear - no way a summer only HP tire will last 46k. Whether you go with the Pilot PS2, Potenza Pole Position, Dunlop Sport Maxx, etc, you can expect 20-25k miles from a quality summer only HP tire . . .

I don't drive a 3gs yet but I went from the Bridgestone SO3 to Michelin Pilot Sports. I think the only reason why I won't buy another set is because I can almost get tires for free now.

The Michelins are so quiet and absorb bumps better than the Bridgestones. Which are two key factors when my ride is dropped and sitting on 20" rims. When the 32nd's started to wear on the Bridestone's they were almost unbearable to drive on.

I guess you get what you paid for, in this certain aspect it is. I have more confidence driving in the rain also with Michelins now.

Guys thanks for all of the responses.

I guess im just looking for a summer tire that will take me another 20k, and will stay quiet for around the same amount of time.

What do you guys think of the BFG TA KDW?

Im not a hard driver. I actually baby my Lexus as much as possible. I just want some quality performance tires to be there when i apply tire shine.

Too many people tried that tire and hated it.
The last several years I've gone with the Michelins and feel they are the best tire in the world. I have the PS2's on my G35 and love them. I have Pilot Sport AS on my SC and they were great for 30K miles. Now they're a little loud but that's expected with thehigh milage they've provided. I made a mistake and bought Dunlop Sport Maxx for the GS...I read about the high ratings on Tirerack and they were a couple hundred cheaper than Michhelin so I copped a set. They aren't too loud but they are definitely louder than the PS2's. They are probably better than a lot of other brands but nothing can touch PS2's...the best tire in the world.

Bridgestone Pole Positions S03's have a super stiff reinforced sidewall which is great for cornering but makes for some ROCK HARD tires. I had them briefly and switched out (on a 2GS that is).

Michelin Pilot Sports (PS2 or AS) are simply the best performance tires made. They're also the most expensive. But if you want a great SMOOOTH drive with very good all around qualities, this is it.

I've had Dunlop SP9000s in the past and was VERY pleased with them.

While others like Nitto, Bridgestone Potenzas, Kuhmo and even Toyo might be cheaper, you basically get what you pay for. They'll either start out sucky, or they'll get sucky pretty quick.

Hope that helps.

I have 18" Bridgestone RE050s on my wife's S500 and I had to replace the rears @ 11k miles. I have 19" PS2s on my 997S and I have to say they have been great tires. I have 6k miles on it now and if I had to guess, I would say that 10k miles out of the rears would not be a stretch. I have PASM on the 997S so I can't compare directly but they seem to be much smoother than the S03s that I had on my 996 cab. I usually deal with Damon at Tire Rack, he seems to know his stuff so he may be able to suggest a good tire for the GS.

From every review I have read and the tirerack reviews, the PS2's win. However, their biggest complaint is treadwear.

When looking at tires, look at the cost per mile as a factor as well.

For example, one of my cars came with Bridgstone 19" run flats. These tires are expensive at $350 each. However, they will last approx. 35k miles on my car.

The PS2's would cost about $300 each for my car, yet they only last 15-20k. So in reality they are twice as expensive.

Personally I do not want to spend 100 per month for tires.

You think $300 is painful? The rear PS2s on my 997S are about $500/ea mounted and balanced.

You make a great point but I can't stand too much noise coming from the tires. I like sport but I like luxury too. Fortunately, I have more than one car to drive. That means the Michelins only get about 6K miles a year put on them. Either way, Michelins are worth the money imo.

I am contemplating swapping out my Yokohamas with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. I have them on my Mini and they have more grip and are far more quiet than my old Dunlop runflats.
