Default Navigation Updates?

Hello, I currently own the 2006 Lexus gs 300 AWD. I was looking at pics of the new IS, the the navi looks crisp on that. I was wondering if they made any updates to the navi on the 2006 GS that make it looks like the new generation Navi. Thanks

Good question but the resolution will stay the same. I want to find a way to replace just the LCD screen.

if you only change the screen that will make it Gen 5 navi? I heard that it was a whole new system...not just a DVD disc...but you had to swap the old Gen 4 module and place in a new Gen 5 one...

Just replacing the LCD screen will not make it a 5th gen NAV but at least the screen will look beautiful. I don't think replacing the whole module will totally work without some sacrifices and maybe it won’t work at all, but who knows maybe it can be done. I would like to know what can be done for this, I just want the screen to look better, the functionality of the 5th gen NAV is not so important to me.

Doesn't the GS450h have the Gen5 nav? If so, it would probably be easier to swap that unit than from an IS. Though probably a 2007 GS300/GS430 later this year would be even easier since you wouldn't have to worry about any hybrid-specific programming on the computer.

Of course, maybe the wiring is completely different. Never taken one apart before.

One thing I miss on the Lexus Nav is the 3D "Birdseye View" that Nissan/Infiniti have on their Nav. I was told that the 5th Generation Nav has 3D shadow or graphics, whatever that means. Does anyone know if the 5th Generation Nav has anything similar to the 3D "Birdseye View" or an improvement in that area from the 4th Generation? Is the only difference in the new Nav the resolution?

Do you know if theres a way to update to this gen 5 Navi? Like through software updates. My friend has a BMW M3 and he updated his navi through a software update and now he has the birdseye view and 3-D view and everything, it really makes the navi look cool. Plus is was a free upgrade for him as well. Maybe Lexus puts out free software updates to the Navi?

no you can't update a gen 4 nav to a gen 5 because it is not from a dvd disc....you have to change the whole navigation module...

the supplier for lexus/toyota nav has never done that before, so i doubt they would start now. the only thing a disc update does for you is add information to the database. the overall look and functions basically remain the same.

as others have mentioned above, the actual computer has to be changed, although it doesn't seem like it would be impossible once the 07 GS is out. if the wiring harnesses are essentially the same, it could work... but they probably will not be exact because there are upgraded features such as voice destination input and also voice bluetooth in this next generation, so there is obviously some extra wiring from the mic input to the nav module...

Yes, the 5th Gen NAV in the 2007 GS is a whole new system. It's hardware that you will need i.e. New LCD Screen, NAV brain, and headunit. It's not as simple as switching out the NAV DVD unfortunately.

While my GS was in service this weekend, my loaner was a brand spanking new '07 ES 350. Let me say, the new 5th gen nav display is awesome. There is a night and day difference between the display on my GS and the new ES.

If I were looking to purchase a GS now, I'd seriously wait until the '07 models.

On a side note, the new ES is really nice. Love the exterior. Drive wise though, I was really glad to get back into my 430. Just something intoxicating about the Lexus V8.
