IF THAT IS THE OFFICIAL HP RATING I WILL PERSONALLY GO TO JAPAN AND SLAP WHOMEVER WAS INVOLVED IN THIS DECISION.
If it loses direct injection, it ALSO loses MPG and will get a worse rating. It has to be a mistake, every new Lexus engine outside the ES/RX has direct injection.

If 342hp is true, maybe they are already thinking of saving the 380 hp for the 4GS ?
because they figure even a 380hp 3GS now is not going to help 3GS sales too much being the V8 version ?
I for one is already only looking forward for the 4GS, even a 380hp GS460 now won't get me overly exited . . .

the is-f is lighter with a more hp engine. the is-f will blow away the gs even with 380hp

Look at this from the bright side.
The only reasonable explanation to this is, Lexus will also introduce all new 2008 GS550d with 5.5 V8 Common rail Quad-turbo diesel with 5000ft/lb of tq and 3000hps motor which also cost less than GS350 and gets about 50miles a gallon while sprinting 0 to 60mph in less than 1ns.
Yeah, for god's sake the GS460's 17/24 is WORSE THAN THE 500-lbs-heavier LS460, which got 17/25 with the new 2008 standards.

Gosh either the press release is horribly wrong or someone at the engineering department is brain-dead.

As I mentioned in the other thread, this is very fishy. Way too many mistakes to be called an official press release.
Redline is 6350 RPM for the GS460, yet it makes peak HP at 6400 RPM?
The engine code is 1UR-FSE and the 'S' denotes direct injection yet the specs for the 4.6L only mention port injection.
There is something strange going on here. Is Toyota yanking our chain? NO way that is an official final press release with all those mistakes.

crap, this has to be one very disappointing day for a lot of lexus owners.....
342hp gs460?!
what is lexus thinking? what makes them think that with a 342 engine they can come close to compete with others, like the e500 and 550i? this is just completely insane, especially when this car is tagged with the term "sport sedan"
this is just nuts. it's still paired with a 8 speed auto, so i assume the same unit as that in the ls460. why on earth would lexus detune the engine by THAT much, all the way from 380hp to 342hp? that's like 40hp loss for no reason.
looking at the gs lineup, gs350 loaded for around 50k, gs450h and gs460 for around 60k, honestly i see no point in picking the gs460. the gs350 is just as fast for much less, probably better fuel. gs450h is faster for more or less the same price i guess. so what is gs460 doing here?
guess at the back of my mind i am still a tad hopeful that this is not true, but if so, it has to be one of the biggest jokes....

OK, well it's official then....
...Time to change the title of this thread.
Anyone with Lexus corporate contacts can shed some light on this?
Although the typos are suspicious, the burden remains to disprove what is printed on the page. Looks official to me, which is good (new engine) but not so good (hp loss vs. LS)

Even though Lexus claims the GS460 will be slower than the GS450h and just as fast as the GS350, I think they are being extremely conservative with that time. No way a car that produces 40 more hp and considerable amount more torque than the 350 will run similar times.
I still think even with 342 hp, the GS460 will still be faster (if not then just as fast) than the 450h. 400 lbs is a lot of weight to give up.

Anyway hp numbers aside, Lexus IMO is really giving the shaft to the 3GS. Sooooo much potential, yet they are selling themselves short by not giving what many are asking for.
No wonder I can get a used 3GS for the same price as a used 2IS.

Well, it's true...an increase is an increase. Just not what a lot hoped. I still want to know why they dropped direct injection and lost 40 hp...
ACTUALLY...this reminds me...no direct injection and -40 hp is the same spec as the Middle East market LS 460 with the 1UR-FE engine. Could it be?

Maybe they want the hybrid to stay as the the top of the line model?? Price wise it is and they have been marketing it for the past 2 years as a performance hybrid. I guess from a performance standpoint it didnt make sense for them to have a cheaper car with considerably more hp out perform it??
