GS 430 ABS diagnostics
Hello guys, I'm new to all this, but I have a 2003 GS430 with an ABS/VSC issue as it seems. The ABS, VSC and VSC OFF light are always on and according to the service manual, I should read the error code from the ABS ECU and fix accordingly. From the research I did, it could be just the calibration data reset from connecting a diagnostic tool (and trying to communicate over CAN with the car which it does not have) or a faulty ABS sensor (or something worse).
Now, what I'm thinking about - I know there is the way to get the error code by shorting the diagnostic connector pins under the dash, or, use the Techstream with appropriate cable.
I have bought the cable (from ebay, in the attached paper it said 1.4.1 and came with a working Techstream version 16) but I'm a bit worried to use it on my GS to not make things worse. As now I don't have ABS/VSC but it drives. In the same way, I'm a bit worried about shorting the incorrect pins in the diagnostic connector, although I would obviously tripple check the service manual when doing so.
Probably using the diagnostic cable seems like better option, but can anyone confirm I cannot damage the car, if the cable is bad or something?
Also, the car goes for a change of the timing belt next week, as it is unclear when it was done last time, so maybe I will just ask them to hook up their tool.

Hello,
Any repair comes with a set of associated risks, so you can never be a 100% sure that even if you do everything right, the issue would get resolved, neither can anyone give you a solid warranty that a knock-off Mini-VCI cable or a good old paperclip won't damage anything. From my experience, connecting Techstream and reading error codes won't cause the ECU to melt down, it's only when you go into firmware updates and other advanced fields that you start asking for trouble.
First thing I would try is visit any car parts store, they should be able to lend you a scan tool for free, Advance Auto has among the best scan tools I've seen. See if that will get you the codes, if not, you will either have to ask a mechanic who will be servicing the car in a near future to read the codes for you, or just bite the bullet and try Techstream software, which can reveal a lot more possibilities.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

I think one ABS wheel sensor is dead. With proper scan tool it will tell you which one it is. Also hard way pop each wheel off, and check resistance on the connector with a DMM. My left front diver sensor was DOA when I got my GS400.
