Some side to side play is acceptable but that seems excessive. Can you possibly try to move the caps up and down? That will simulate the motion of the rod and give you a better idea of the play on those rod journals.
Whats the condition of the lower pan? Any buildup?
There was actually a small amount of sludge in the oil pan, (bit less than a handful). Did not see any metal shavings or big pieces. I can get a picture tomorrow, too dark right now and I forgot to take pictures. Makes me think that the sludge buildup probably messed with lubrication.
I actually dragged a magnet through and there weren't any noticeable particles sticking to it. Nothing shining in the light as well. Other than the sludge, the oil looks ok.

is the noise coming from the top of the engine ? sounds like a stuck lifter, i installed a jdm motor into my GS and has a knocking sound similar to yours i threw in some Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate 16.9 oz and cheap oil and drove it for 30 miles knock noise gone

Too late to tell now, already pulled the motor since I was planning on a GTE swap haha
i would never buy a car that had engine rebuilds, but again thats just me.
Yeah I didn't really pay attention when I bought it, even looking in the oil cap you can see a small amount of dark sludge. I wanted to swap it down the road anyway since its a '99, didn't expect it to happen so soon though! Oh well, time to make it better.
I listen to your video u have a serious problem its a rod noise maybe #2 or #3. Iwould stop driving the car at this time and get it repair asap. Ance you get a good guy they can rebuild that engine to run like new. Hopefully the crank is not damage.

i wanted to swap a 98 but 2 years from now, unfortunately previous owner botched the cooling system and blew a head gasket, couldnt afford a gte ended up getting a jdm GE in there.

That's a bummer. Luckily my GE had a pretty new water pump, ps pump, timing belt tensioner, belts, radiator and only 127k miles on the chassis. Will save some money swapping the parts over.
