The point is, like you said know your car's limits and know the other car's potential, there is many thread like this in the past years. If you fall asleep at the wheel or not paying attention a G35 can easily take a GS400. I know from experience, I owned my G35 coupe at the same time with my GS400 and boy is the G35 quick off the line!!

The GS400 with the right driver can still win but its very close match, and like you say its not a Win every time. Not to put down my own car but the G35 is one of my favorite cars of all time. The G37's though more power (328 HP) its a bit heavier and about the same quickness as past G35's. I also had a G35S Sedan with 306hp and i believe that car can take a stock GS400 off the line and up to 60mph. However, this tread started on the OP losing against an Avalon.. And my friend has a 2015 V6 Camry which is probably the fastest Camry to date (Which a V8 GS can still win) besides maybe the 2018's which is yet to be tested.

So yes, G35/37 350z/370z's can be faster but not proven to win everytime against a V8 GS either, they're sports cars and most often have people driving them that have manual trans and knowing how to drive it well. The OP loss to a 2006 Avalon.. I driven the Avalon and its quick for a family Sedan, its not that impressive like the Infiniti's or the Z cars. I personally don't think an Avalon has any real play here, I think the OP's car is either too old mechanically or he just fell asleep and let someone overtake him because he underestimated the other car and wasn't ready for a fight. I will say the GS430 is a touch slower on take off than the GS400 so at this level of performance especially on the street, its anybody's game. One of my friends has a Acura Type R and he has embrassed so many V8 cars (Mostly Mustangs) so having been into the Racing scene for many years.. Never underestimate anyone, you never know what they have modded under the hood..

The point of my reply is a a healthy running Lexus GS V8 shouldn't lose to a V6 Avalon..
Motortrend listed/tested the 2015 Camry V6 at 6.1sec and the 2012 Camry V6 at 5.8 sec. That, coupled with a lighter vehicle, more efficient energy transfer (FWD), and a newer more refined engine, the Camry you mention would absolutely have a shot at beating an older, heavier GS430.
The two cars being compared (GS430/Avalon) are not necessarily meant to be speed demons. Both are technically comparable family haulers, with the Lexus doing it with more luxury and smoothness with the 4.3L.

Another example of "it's not about how fast you go, it's how you go fast:"

The Audi S3 has 292hp and weighs around 3,400lbs. It has an ever so slight edge in power-to-weight over the GS400/430. It's got a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds. It absolutely WRECKS the GS. I know that firsthand.

HOWEVER, the S3's 5-60 speed from a roll is 5.8 seconds. A well-running GS would beat it in this test. Why? It's all about how the power gets to the wheels. The S3 has some kind of gearing/launch control advantage from a dead top.

I don't remember if I already posted this particular sermon in this thread.

99rx is spot on.

Everyone has a different idea of speed. Summarized IMO: the GS4*0 just arent that fast to me, unless turbod/supercharged, especially by modern standards.

The S3 is AWD and probably has a launch mode that loads it into its power band and shoots it off. On a 5mph roll it has to wait to rev up, where turbo and smaller motors can sometimes fall flat especially with downshifting compared to more torquey motors.

Thats why roll racing does have its advantages with cars with strong and flat torque curves.

Many newer cars from Ford, and Chevy have continous cam phasing for these purposes. The coyote 5.0L as well as the LT1 and LT4 have such nice torque curves all throughout the rev range as well as the known great horsepower. Im sure Lexus' 2UR-GSE 5.0L do as well.

But! Modern transmissions are now 8 to 10 speeds which allow much more aggresive gearing and torque down low to engines without sacrificing mpg. The top gears can be much longer

I started a thread doing a fun comparison between the 2UR and the Coyote over in one of the F forums. I think it was RC-F. Both motors are actually pretty similar. The Coyote has an almost 1:1 bore/stroke ratio so it's nicely balanced and puts out more torque than the 2UR. But I digress.

I'm excited to see what my planned CD009 swap does for my car's "speed." I've heard some people knocked a full half second off their 0-60 and 1/4 mile times just by swapping in a manual trans.

Yes and those smaller 5.0L DOHC motors have much higher compression compared to their OHV 6.2L or larger displacement brothers.

I would say don't do the swap for power, but rather than if you really like manually shifting gears or a manual in general.

Power mode is the PWR switch on the console bezel.
