Default Gs400 Engine knock, how screwed am I

Hey guys, new to the forum and I just bought a '99 gs400 a couple of hours ago. When I test drove it the other day it was fine I punch it and everything masking sure nothing was going to fall apart. Well I just bought it this evening and drove it home and on the way to my buddy's house I pinched it on the interstate up to 80 mph to pass a vehicle. When I shortly after that when I was on the on ramp the red oil light started blinking. I pulled over as soon as I could and checked the oil to see that it was only slightly low. I then babied it to the gas station near by to buy some oil to top it off. Got to my buddies house and then the VSC light and check engine light were on. I just quickly looked it and all I saw on the forum was how to reset it and didn't think much of it just thought it was a bug. About half an hour later I drove it back to the gas station to get some snacks and it drove fine. When I was at the gas station I went to start the car again and it wouldn't even turn over. I tried asking around to see if anybody had jumper cables thinking it was a bad battery, but with no luck. Couple minutes later gave it a try and it started right up. On the drive home I noticed it was running rough. As soon as I pulled on the street to the neighborhood the low oil light on the left came on and the whole engine shut down. I was freaking out and tried starting it again to see if I could atleast limp it to my buddies house and did it but now it knock when under slight acceleration. Any advice would be great looking up on how to do a rebuild Incase it needs it. Thanks.

Before you bought the car, did you know that it had a bad oil leak?

The owner said it had leaking valve covers and they were replaced, even had documentation of the mechanics replacing them.

I wouldn't drive the car until I could have it checked out by a reputable mechanic. Next time the check engine light comes on don't reset it; run the code and that will point you in the right direction. These engines run forever with proper care and it could be something as simple as low oil pressure...but you don't want to make it worse. Get it checked out now.

run the CEL codes and see what you get but it sounds eerily similar to the symptoms I had when I accelerated hard and had a bad OCV valve

IF the CEL code is a P1346 (B) OR P1349 you may have a easy fix Post 67 from here

please use spaces in your paragraphs. I almost couldn't stand reading that jumble

My son blew an enginbe on Subaru WRX STi like that. culprit was oil pick up tube broke off and oil pump was not picking up the oil. Engine seized up by the time he coasted off freeway. Cost of replacing engine was almost 10G in CAD. Now he is grown up. Drives Bimmer 328iX in winter, M235i in summer.

nope...I saw that in your title but I just couldn't read all of that jumble to see what actually was going on.

Well for an update, there's definitely a rod knock coming from the driver side. Going to see if I remove the oil pan and find the loose rod and maybe re-tighten it if possible.

Do not waste your time. the oil pan you plan on removing to "tighten" connecting rod end caps will not allow you to gain access. if your oil pressure light came on and now the engine is knocking, your best bet will be to pickup an ebay LKQ motor for about 1,000 (going rate). have it installed and ride off into the sunset.

Yeah, I did some more research and it looked like a pretty hopless battle, good thing I only spent $2500 on it, right?

My guess is oil starvation caused worn(burnt) out rod bearing or piston rings causing piston slap. I never drive vehicles more than 5 years. Never ran into major issues.

On a previous car I did an oil/ filter change and under certain conditions like hard turns and certain rpms my oil light would come on. I swapped out the oil filter and it never happened again

On another note. I recently got a really bad knocking sound and I thought the engine was toast. We got it on a lift and found out it was only the flexplate.

OP how many miles? Chances are it's not as bad as you think. Take it to someone who works on these vehicles.
