Actually the obsession with precious metals, particularly gold, goes way back.
In today's context, you can google Donald Trump's hot rod Boeing 757-200 - you'll find that it has 24K gold plating on all of its fixtures etc. right down to the seat belt buckles.
And of course, The Donald carries this theme to his Trump Tower residence. And there isn't a whole lot of resentment towards him for using gold as a symbol of his extravagance.
