Default Beginner Project Advice

Hey everyone, I'm new to the world of Lexus. I'm just 16 and looking to get into more knowledge about cars, and am very interested in all types, and motivated to learn. I am very interested in some projects and things but my knowledge is rather limited. Recently, my father gave me his old GS300 2000 as a 16th birthday present.

I wanted to see about any sorts of projects or ideas for things I can do to further my knowledge of cars and my car, that would be beneficial. I'm looking for something not too complicated, I do have some knowledge, as I do all my own oil changes, brakes, etc. but that's about as far as it goes. I'm thinking maybe something to raise horsepower or something like that, as there aren't any maintenance i need to do.

I wouldn't like to put more than a few hundred dollars into parts, because the car does have 205k miles on it, but has had regular maintenance, brakes, oil changes, timing belt rather recently, and has no problems whatsoever, but I still wouldn't feel comfortable putting too much into a car that is likely to soon need struts and has this many miles.

Any advice or comments helpful, even if you just wanna talk about the car or yours, I am a huge fan of Lexus' now.

Check out our performance section for ideas to for extra power, but unlike honda, a few hundred bucks ain't gonna do much for power on this car. Being that it does have so many miles on it, certain maintenance work can actually release some power including things like replacing fuel filters and cleaning up the inside of your throttle body. This site has all the answers, you must take the time and use the search function to get your ideas. But being at 16, I think this is plenty of power you would need.

A good place to start would be the DIY thread in the stickies just above these threads....

Just read through everything in there You'll learn a ton, and find a few things you'll want to do

Hey man! I'm out in AZ too, always nice to see more members here. We actually have an AZ Lexus Club that you can learn a lot from as well. At 205k your 2gs is just getting broken in my dude
Read up about the basic maintenance and what typically goes wrong with the car. Make sure you check out some key suspension parts to make sure you don't have any bushings that are about to go, as that seems to be something that the 2GS has a big issue with.
Like stated above, you're not going to be able to get a whole lot of HP for a little with the GS. Maybe look into some more cosmetic things instead? Who knows. My GS400 was my first car as well, and I'm really glad of it. Just remember that it's not a honda, so you gotta treat it as such :P

Join the AZ Lexus Club on FB, we are all local and would love to help you out if you ever need it. We have a lot of meet ups and cruises as well:

If your only looking to put in a "few hundred dollars" and raise your horsepower... don't bother, you'll just be wasting your money.

IMO, if I were you, I would just add a system or go with cosmetic parts.

Welcome to the forums... Congrats on the GS.. Its a great platform in any model.... You can check out the link in my signature for all DIY's, common problems, and modifications within that link..... I would say maintenance first but thats been done already.... Its up to you to decide what modifications you want and its best to figure out a plan of action.... GL....
