2000 gs300 solution to cracking, popping, metal sound while braking and turning wheel
After scouring the internet for the last year to fix this problem and visiting a few garages all of whom could never identify the problem my friend who works at Toyota said the grinding, cracking, popping noise when you brake and turn the wheel or reverse and cut the wheel is call "pad slap", in order to fix the problem you have to install install a shim kit ($50 on carpartsshed.com or $88 from the dealer) or goto Toyota and get a brake job and mark sure they install the shims. Sound is completely gone and car feels great. I think one thing that is key is when you install new pads on the Lexus GS you do it at the dealer or buy the OEM pads and take them to a garage but be absolutely sure they come with shim kits. Changing the ball joints, control arms, etc. will not fix this problem. Good Luck fellas!

The same sounds happen with LBJs, from what I've read. If I was having these sounds on my car, I'd replace LBJs first, if that doesn't fix it this would be the next step

Hmmmm!? How vewy intewesting!?
This sounds very much like what I am experiencing. A couple of people have looked at mine now and have said bushes/joints "seem" ok.
My question is, how Could I check this myself? Would this theoretically happen if I take the wheel off and have someone pump the brakes d'ya reckon?
Gunna give it a go this weekend and report back if I find anything interesting/relevant but if anyone can suggest a "test" that'd be great!
Please be to Jebus I get rid of this noise!!
