My Lexus GS 300 stopped shifting. I cannot go from drive to reverse and visa versa.
A local mechanic showed me how to overide the shift lock by pressing down with a screwdriver in a small slot near the shift lever. He pried off a tiny plastic cover to get at it. I can now shift using a screwdriver in trhat litle slot. "YAY" the mechanic said the repair would be at least $600.00 and probably more, Then, Lexus dealer said they need $150.00 just to diagnose the problem before they can give me an estimated repair cost. Maybe they will charge $2000.00?
HELP ANYONE PLEASE. Thank you Mel
I had this issue before...If you don't mind using the shift lock release do so...I couldn't stand it. I went and had it diagnosed. It was the transmission ecu that went haywire. They had to drop my transmission to get to the ecu.
Thanks for the resposes. It seems there is a lot for me to check out.
Tiger4life: Excuse my ignorance but can you or anyone tell me what a ECU is? Is it an onboard computer or somethinbg like that?
tWong: My wife looked while i stepped on the brakes and the stoplites lit up ok. But, is there a 3rd brake lite too? I'll have to look for it. Do you know how many brake lite bulbs ther are total in the GS 300?
rl9010: Thanks. Again, what is an ECU? I wonder if anyone can tell me exactly how to find the fuse so I can check it. Thank you all
ok first things first, check the fuse for ur ABS in the little fuse box in the drivers side foot well by the spot where u put ur left foot when its not on the brake. when my shifter locked, that was the problem. I replaced the fuse and i havent had an issue since.
people have already said what the problem was. lock thread, end of story. Ignorance CAN'T be excused for someone who doesn't want to do their own homework and search what an ECU is! Sheesh...
