Default Shift doesn't lock at D?

I was driving on the freeway with my hand on the ****; I think I accidently push to “N” my car start going crazy with the engine running at like 6-7k rpm. I quickly shifted back to "D" and it drops back to 2k rpm. Doesn't this damn car lock our shift if brake doesn’t apply?

Are you shifting? No? Then get your hand off the ****! It doesn't belong there at all unless you are shifting. And NO, there is no lock in D or N. It is designed that way so if you need to shift out of gear for any reason (like a stuck throttle) all you have to do is push forward.

The **** isn't a hand rest.

You must not be adjusting your seat properly.

How is this even possible? I can see a hand or knee hitting the shifter, but a shoulder??

I never even look at the shift indicator. for instance, when i back up and stop to change to drive, i just pull the shifter down 2 clicks (without pushing the button), the shifter wont move lower than drive without pushing the button. Those of you with gated shifters though, just have a break pedal lock out, so I guess it has a diff feel.
