Default 2JZGTE - Am I missing something here?

Wikipedia lists this engine at 276 hp. A GS400 has 300hp stock. Why do people swap in a 2JZ? Is it because of the modding potential with the twin turbos?

I heard a 2JZ will power the next moon buggy, that's how awesome it is.

Good (very basic) question, but pretty easy to find if you just do some google searching.

I'll give you the short version and because of the flaming going on here (knock it off guys, please) and I'll close this thread and ask you to please search a bit more on this engine.

The 2JZ-GTE is underrated from the factory and is a very over-designed/ overbuilt motor. It's smooth, relatively cheap to tune by upping the boost levels and can take a massive amount of turbo boost even on stock internals. The UZ v8 motors (1uz and 3uz in the GS400/GS430 respectively) were not designed to take boost from the factory and even though they can, it's much more difficult to do than a 2JZ.

The 2JZ-GTE first came out in the Japan version of the GS (called the Toyota Aristo) and then followed in the Supra. The 276 hp rating is something that all Japanese makers followed as their 'max' for a period of time, so that's why you see that rating on the motor and others from that era... reality is higher and much higher when you crank up the boost.
