So I took the old one last night guys. Put the new one. I'm much happier with the sound ☺☺☺. THANK YOU SO MUCH TO THE GUY WHO MADE THIS DIY. You saved me $300+ fees in an hour and 20 mins. Had the tools. Read the DIY correctly then went at it. Putting it back together was the harder task. But not impossible going slow seeing how things work. Here's a pic of the old speaker. Falling apart. Old since 2001 probably hasn't been changed out. Thanks again to this DIY!

I haven't seen a non custom sub box since 2001 lol. That's a throwback.

149db at the windshield at 35hz. For me performance outweighs how pretty the trunk looks.

The impedance on the stock OEM is 2 ohms. I don't think it is dual voice coils. Here is a picture of the specs on the back of the OEM one.

That should be the oem Pioneer sub, oem Pioneer amp also only pushes out 40- 50 watts RMS.
IIRC, the Nakamichi units use a different sub and amp.

I just fixed my blown sub, thanks to the OP for the clear write up. I would highly recommend getting a set of interior trim levers for this sort of work. It makes removing the snaps easy. And inexpensive too, with the ubiquitous 20% off coupon.

Instead of replacing my sub, I repaired it with a new surround. The foam rots after a decade or so, but it's possible to buy a new surround and glue it in place.

After replacement it sounds good as new. What an improvement! Always great when you can do a $600 job for under $25.

Your sub is 2 Ohms, but it varies. The Mark Levinson sub in my 2002 GS300 is 8 ohm, one voice coil.

My ML sub's foam ring is also separating from the outer edge... rattles and sounds like crap.

I did a lot of reading on the many threads in this section, but they go back YEARS .... and all the recommended replacements on here seem to be discontinued ... :/

We need some UPDATED sub recommendations!!
