look behind the L symbol...there's a tiny box opening. get a flash light and look for the emergency latch, that should open it.

I just had the exact same problem, after fumbling about for a while I drenched the entire latch assembly through the grill with WD40 than pressed down on the hood until I heard a click, I then opened the hood normally.

Ok what does this mechanism look like to get to the cable on an rx300 1999-- I was hit in my bumper and mine will not release and latch won't open it.

I'm having this problem now. Car is dead and hood won't open. I've been trying to find the latch you guys are talking about and the emergency latch behind the Lexus emblem but can't seem to find it. Can anyone post up some pictures to give me a descriptive view of everything?

you can unlock the door on the passenger side with the key manually.when the battery dead same thing happen to me.won't work on driver side but will work on passenger side.

The latch cable getting jammed up or broken is a common issue on the 2GS from what I hear, when I bought mine you could open it but to get it to shut completely you had to fiddle with the latch with a screwdriver, I ended up paying lexus 400$ to replace the cable, I know that's way to much to pay, but didn't wanna worry about it anymore

so nobody posted a picture of the latch behind the hood? I have the same problem and can't open the hood nor find this latch you are talking about. sure wish a pic was here.
