Default torque wrench

everybody talks about torquing things to spec. My torque wrench is 18" and doesnt fit in most places where precision is needed. Any advice where I can buy a shorter one?

harbor freight online. smallest is 3/8" drive iirc

or just count how much force per foot. i.e. 50 lbs of force at a 1ft. radius = 50lbs/ft
