I recently acquired a used year 2000 GS 300 and would like to have some small tuning done on it, nothing fancy. I am also quite unfamiliar with all the complex technical stuff behind most of the tinkering, but would like to see an increase in performance for my car. In short, I'm just an average joe driver. Please don't be so hard on me... I'm still trying to learn about cars in general lol.
Anyways, I've heard from a friend who had his VW GTI's ECU reprogrammed by an in house VW tuner (of which he says 3 exists). I was wondering if a similar type of work can be done with my Lexus? Can I bring my Lexus to a dealer of some sort and have my ECU reprogrammed? Something like TRD?
ECU remapping can yield very nice results on turbo engines, which I think the GTI has. The GS300 is a naturally aspirated engine (2JZ-GE) and ECU remapping an a stock engine will not yield much at all. It's pretty much a waste of $.
However the 2JZ-GE responds very well to a turbo and real gains can be made going that route.
Reprogramming our ECUs is not possible. Your only options are a piggyback or standalone engine management system. In your case, your best option is a piggyback such as an apex'i safc. It is not hard to install, only a matter of wiring a few wires, and on a dyno, a tuner can do it in give or take, an hour. You should see about 10rwhp gain.
