Default need a replacement steering rack for my '98 GS400

I have a leaky steering rack and Lucas stop leak hasn't fixed it. I think I need to replace the rack. What's the most reasonable place to get one? I see some generic remanufactured ones online from random parts places for ~$350. I wanted to see if the forum had any input first though before I just picked a site and bought the cheapest I could find.

All will say, dealer only. Next best thing is look on ebay for someone getting rid of one...

How often do these racks fail? I don't know if I want to buy a used one just to have it fail like mine has at 104k miles.

Are the remanufactured ones not good? I can't imagine how much a dealer would charge for a new one...

only like $1300 not bad You might want to find out where its leaking, you might be able to get away with a gasket kit for $125

http://www.sewellpartsonline.com/***...l=202&year=161

and its not so much that re-manufactured is bad, just everyone here rather be safe than sorry by buying oem or better.

Find out who rebuilds them where you live, take out the rack (or have it taken out) and get it rebuilt.

Is that the one that the person above just posted about selling? Sent an email anyways... the ebay seller is negotiable, so maybe I'll just try that one for $120 shipped.

Do these typically go bad? Is it a good idea to go w/ a ~90k mile old one, or will it go bad shortly?

I'd buy it, have it checked by a hydraulic shop. I'd imagine there is a limitation to them but it's the seals inside that go bad from constant wear.

Typically these don't go bad. I bought it from Aliga bc the Lexus dealer said I needed one. So they wanted 985.00 with a discount. I took my car to my brother's shop for a second opinion.

It turned out to be the inner tie rod only. So moral of the story is, F the stealership.

The dealer diagosed $$$ instead of finding the actual problem. They would've fixed inner tie rod then charged you $985...SMH!!!!! His rack is leaking though the seals have gone bad. A hydraulic shop should get it back in good shape for a small fee.
