License Plate Frame
My GS400 came with a black plastic piece screwed into the front of my car, about 13" by 3", any my license plate was attached to it along with a standard 12 x 6 frame. I took it off and can't comprehend why it would have been there in the first place.
Are there slighlt longer plates that this peice is needed for mounting? If it is there for strictly spacing purposes, then why wouldn't there just be the standard spacer between the screws and the body of the car?
I'm trying to figure out if it really had any purpose.
PS What nice license plate frames do you all have? I want a nice replacement.

and since the standard plate and frame are only 12 inches, the black mount (if that is what it is called) sticks out on either sides.
Looks better when I removed it, but does it serve any purpose that I'm missing?? Doesn't seem like it is needed for European plates, since they are much longer, at 20+ inches, and even so, they could mount right onto the bumper (not like this thing was saving me any holes in my bumper)
Car was bought in Maryland, if anyone knows, please let us know!

This plate is still illegal in cali, but more oem if thats what you mean. Cops would probably tend to shrug it off.

I am in Ohio and I HATE the front licence plate! The cops don't pull you over from the front!? Anyway I like loop holes... The law in Ohio says the the numbers have to be showing in the front and the numbers and expiration in the rear. So I folded my plate into a 'U' shape so that only the numbers show and I mounted it in my stock bumper in the lower portion of the air dam. I put the holes vertically into the underneath of the bumper so they don't show. Kinda looks like a UK plate now. Much better! I haven't fixed the previous holes yet though. I will probably fill and paint those.
